Episode 29 feat. DJ MARSMAN

Learning her DJ trade alongside Steve Rachmad, Adam Beyer and Joel Mull, as resident at Amsterdam's club Mazzo around the turn of the Millennium, Estroe, AKA Esther Roozendaal, was an onstage presence at huge events like Dance Valley, Awakenings and Tresor, way before venturing into the studio. 

Three years after her debut album, she releases 'Comfort and Closure' on the 14th of November via EevoNext. Softer and more delicate than her techno reputation might suggest, at it's heart, amongst swirling beatless instrumental and breakbeats, is a beating four four heart. This is also what you'll find on her podcast for us, with a tracklist covering Kenny Larkin (who Estroe played alongside at this year's ADE), Swerl and Kiki.

The Scenery label is now relatively well established after its first few releases, with discerning DJs and dancers everywhere lapping up the rough and raw electronic offerings. Label boss ASOK steps up with the next release, and that it comes with a remix from Dutchman Boris Bunnik in his Versalife guise is the icing on the cake.

Having released on labels like M>O>S before now, ASOK is well versed in proper house music as this new EP proves. It kicks off with the misty eyed nostalgia of ‘Hunter’, a mid tempo jam that drifts along with frazzled synth lines offset by more bittersweet melodies. Well-programmed drums underpin the whole thing and it leaves you feeling cast adrift in some deep space cavern. Delsin and Clone associate, Versalife, reworks the same track. His take reimagines it as a kinetic sub aquatic affair laden with celestial chords, rubbery basslines and soothing ambient soundscapes.

It’s then back to ASOK for ‘Cabal’, a pad laced jam that glows warm and radiates heat as soft edged percussion and increasingly jacking beats propel the vibe along. Some fine and bulbous basslines eventually gurgle into the mix to add some serious weight, and molten acid also characterises the second half of this most emotive affair.

Last but not least, Millennium 2.2 picks up the tempo - a well-driven deep house affair with swirling pads adding swathes of scale to proceedings. Roughshod analogue lines, glistening keys and a greyscale mist all form nebulous clouds that pull you right into the core of the track and leave you feeling as if you’re in another world.

This is heady and original dance music from Scenery that continues the motion that has been set with the first few releases.

k_schreiber is a London based DJ and producer with a passion for eclectic electronics: electro, techno, IDM, acid and house

Nurtured on a diet of soul, funk and hip hop, his musical horizons were broadened by John Peel and Gilles Peterson leading to a vinyl obsession that persists to this day.
Having earned his stripes as a DJ and promoter, it was only a matter of time before his love of moving the crowd paved the way for a natural progression into music making.
Detroit, Chicago & Berlin are huge influences in his techno and electro productions, with the melodic and deep side of house reserved for his Sarru Project alias.

Bio: 
There rarely is a musician to be seen, who feels home in more than just one musical genre the way Matthias Vogt does. He’s a trained jazz pianist, passionate dj, arranger and producer, devoted to music. Matthias is based in Frankfurt, Germany.

Vogt’s music has been released on handpicked labels: he is working with Chicago based Large Music, Teng (as Mias Void), Urbantorque, Komplex de Deep, Saw Recordings – the label of house-legends Satoshi Tomiie and Hector Romero. Plus Frankfurt’s finest Polytone Records, Leeds based Fullbarr imprint, Cologne’s Treibstoff, Fred Everything’s Lazy Days Recordings and Lo:Rise/Defected. A dj since the early nineties, Matthias experienced dance music’s fast growing and constantly altering change as a part of Frankfurt’s vital club scene. Vogt performed regurlarly at Sven Vath’s Cocoonclub. 

He also played gigs at clubs such as The End in London, Club 11, Amsterdam, Tresor, Berlin, Cielo, New York or Arma 17 in Moscow and gigs around the globe f.e. Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland or Hungary. Furthermore Matthias is a much asked for remixer.

Together with his friend, infamous producer Ian Pooley, Vogt forms M.V.I.P.- (Aviator EP / Pooled, Barrique EP / Lazy Days). Back in 2002 Matthias founded his widely well known deep house project Motorcitysoul. Starting as a solo project and continued as a duo after the first album “Did You Expect That?”. Motorcitysoul released on highly acclaimed house imprints like Freerange, Simple, Aus Music or Poker Flat. The project ended their mutual work in 2012.

In his second life, Vogt is a trained musician… He wrote, arranged and recorded seven jazz studio albums! But that’s a complety different story, check out his unique project [re:jazz] – new album Kaleidoscope, produced by Jazzanova’s Axel Reinemer out now on Infracom – or his Matthias Vogt Trio.
Both, working as a jazz pianist and being a dj/producer, Matthias Vogt continues to bring together the best of both worlds and creating his very own unique style and music.
