It doesn’t take a lot to convince a kush princess to come to Holland for a week, but an offer to work with the country’s hardest hitting electronic producers is one winning strategy. And so it came to pass that after popping in for an appearance on the Barong Family Album last year, Bay Area rapper Lil Debbie stayed on to record a whole collaborative EP with some of the label’s roster.

If Mike Cervello’s new release on Barong Family evokes a wide range of emotions, well, it’s meant to. Mike was feeling all of them in the studio and did not hold back. On the follow-up to last year’s successful Empire EP (which included the hugely popular ‘Fuego’), he goes from self-assured to vulnerable and from outgoing to introspective over the course of four stages of party-readiness. Opener ‘Confessions’ is all take-no-shit assertiveness, girls having a good time and not here for your lame pick-up lines. It sets the stage for the collective euphoria of the title-track, which delivers a large swing in the right direction. The comedown is immediate, but ‘The Crown’ is not ready to let you go until all that pent-up energy is released. The EP finishes on a rare touch of innocence and emotional intimacy. ‘Love is a Scary Word’—yes, but necessary. Open up.
