Kalumet is back with his chill show, the Chillum Nights. This time he selected from releases of Trimurti Records, with special downtempo tunes from DzaDzakin, eniChkin, Minimal Criminal and Heavenly Father amongst others. Kalumet would like to promote not only the label, but Trimurti Festival too, which is happening these days in Russia. In a lo-fi world stacked with ‘memey’ DJ names aplenty, the ‘DJ Windows XP’ alias makes for a real contender in being the best of the bunch. The Amsterdam duo burst into the scene only a couple months back, starting off strong with their split with DJ Relationship Goals (another good one) on DJ Haus’ E-Beamz label, which is, of course, home to the DJ Boring genre classic ‘Winona’. Now DJ Windows XP are back with their second EP entitled ‘Sometimes I Feel Sad, Sometimes Happy’, forthcoming on young Netherlands label Who’s Susan.Our premiere today is the EP’s title track, sitting at A3 of the 5-track SUSAN003. ‘Sometimes I Feel Sad, Sometimes Happy’ opens with thick kicks and a brooding acid-techno bass, but the shadowy mood becomes abruptly lifted by a comedic interjection of the unmistakable Windows XP start-up sample, which later goes to build the melodic palate of the 6-minute tune. As the percussion takes a break a calm sentimentalism pervades, via mellow airy chordal synths that echo with celestial rings. In come the familiar raw percussive highs, but before we get too comfortable the duo adds in a chant-like vocal line which recolours the bass kicks as feet stamping to a mysterious ritualistic dance.

Just as the title suggests, the rest of the EP contains fiery groovers exploring moods from euphoria to melancholy, all expanding on the duo’s self-declared brand of ‘emotional’ house. Despite their light-hearted name and work in a genre traditionally marked by fun tracks with catchy vocals, DJ Windows XP make certain their tunes carry a whole heap of weight. Long time channel pals, "Who’s Susan" have kindly chucked a lovely DJ Windows XP jam our way from their brand new bi-polar-esque titled EP, "Sometimes I Feel Happy, Sometimes Sad" - I guess operating systems do have feelings after all. After making serious waves off the back of their last release on DJ Haus' imprint, E-Beamz; the Amsterdam duo's second offering demonstrates another, perhaps more considered facet to their production ability - yet retaining their trademarked raw stonk.

Lots of questions are still left to be answered, though. Who really is Susan? Maybe ‘it’ could have been me? At the end of it all though, who cares. Let your synapses turn around the infinite situations, with infinitesimal different angles round and round your brain- what’s gone is gone. Dust to dust.  Stare into the abyss, sink into your cocoon, let the bass drum thud in the back of your throat, the background synths wrap over you, crescendoing into the most alleviating rush. Pretty blissful stuff and certainly not just another jovial 'DJ' pseudonym.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONERN: WHILE PATROLING THE FORBIDDEN FOREST LATE LAST NIGHT, WE CAPTURED A HUMAN-LIKE LIFEFORM THAT WE BELIEVE MAY BE EXTRA-TERRESTRIIAL IN ORIGIN. THE CREATURE, WHO WAS ABLE TO CONVERSE IN BOTH DUTCH AND ENGLISH, TOLD US HIS NAME WAS “DARLING”. WHEN WE DISCOVERED HIM, HE WAS CLEARLY DISOREINTED AND CHANTING THE LETTERS “J”, “P” AND “S”.

IN HIS POSSESSIONS WE DISCOVERED A PLASTIC BOX INSCRIBED WITH THE ABOVE INITIALS AND A FLAT BLACK DISC STAMPED WITH THE CODE ST005. UNDER INTERROGATION, THE SUBJECT TOLD US THAT THE BOX WAS A “DRUM MACHINE”. IT HAD BEEN GIFTED TO HIM BY HIS GRANDFATHER, WHO WENT BY THE NAME “JOOP”. HE ADDED THAT MUSIC CREATED USING THIS DEVICE HAD BEEN ETCHED INTO THE SURFACE OF THE BLACK DISC.

HAVING FOUND A SUITABLE MACHINE TO EXTRACT THE MUSIC FROM WITHIN THE GROOVES, WE WERE ASTONISHED BY WHAT WE HEARD. THERE WERE SIX COMPOSITIONS ON WHICH THE SUBJECT’S FAMILY “DRUM MACHINE” WAS PROMINENTLY FEATURED, REPLICATING PROGRAMMED ELECTRONIC RHYTHMS THAT SOUNDED ALIEN IN ORIGIN.

THE WARM AND LOOSE FEEL OF THESE PERCUSSIVE ELEMENTS WAS FURTHER ENHANCED BY THE SUBJECT’S CHOICE OF ACCOMPANYING ELECTRONIC MUSICAL FEATURES. THESE FREQUENTLY CAUGHT OUR EAR AND ENHANCED OUR COLLECTIVE MOOD. THESE VARIOUSLY SOUNDED INTERGALACTIC, LOVED-UP, DREAMY, OTHERWORLDLY AND SOOTHING. ONE OF OUR COLLEAGUES, WITHIN EARSHOT, SPONTANEOUSLY STARTED DANCING.

WE HAVE KEPT THE SUBJECT UNDER OBSERVATION AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO UNLESS WE RECEIVE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CONTRARY. IT IS OUR BELIEF THAT THE MUSIC SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.

WOLF Music (@nysoul) heads Stu & Matt are individuals who are always keeping their ear to the ground in order to discover new talents for their longstanding record label. They also always keep faith with their residents and artists who have been with them since pretty much right in the beginning. They've actually stated in the past that the label is based around their three resident producers, Greymatter, KRL and Medlar who have been a staple on the label and regulars at their showcases since the very beginning. Believing in the development of an artist's sound is maybe not something every label does these days, usually playing it safe and going with the sound of the moment. But not WOLF Music, who stay true to their roots.

With that being said, resident @Medlar is back with another EP for the UK staple. Speaking of development of sound, WOLFEP042 is once again an indication that Medlar is an extremely versatile producer, this time opting for a more Detroit-inspired, electro sound. Each track on the EP is named after one of the producer's favourite restaurants in Palermo, Istanbul, Paris and of course Peckham. And who better to enlist for help on a track based on a South London restaurant than @FYIChris, two of Peckham's finest. 

Our premiere, 'Queen of Tacos' has some tough drums with a sampled drum break forming the basis of the groove while a deep bass perfectly plays into the rhythm. Warm chords and warbled acidy tones contrast the slightly colder drums, lending a nice balance to the tune. A saw-y lead synth takes us away into the climax while a cheeky vocal sample asks "are you telling me that you can't get this in Mexico?". We foresee this one to be a dance floor monster, taking punters into some joy-filled late night moments.

"We were driving through the deserts of California when we hatched the plan to release a boxed set of the singles from Skying, unaware that it would balloon into the monster that it did. We started off small, just one version per single. However, through chance encounters and wanting to involve more people whose music excited us, the box soon grew into an impressive collection of sonic tapestries and hypnotic grooves and it became apparent that this was no longer about the singles. It was now about this new music which had used the different elements of Skying as a springboard to other ideas. We encouraged everyone involved to be as obtuse as possible, to get as far away from the original source material as they could. The results are stunning, and I think it's just a shame we couldn't have done more."
