"The first sound is set in motion, is caught up by the next, which is caught up by the next, etc., in a powerful crescendo."  In 1961, Else Marie Pade wrote the tape composition Etude, which was met with greater excitement among reviewers than electronic music in general at the time. The length of the piece is 333 seconds, and as a tribute to Else Marie Pade 11 artists have remixed Etude – all 11 remixes with the same length as the original, available on a new album from Dacapo "EMP RMX 333 – a tribute to Else Marie Pade (1924-2016)". The results are greatly diverse, but all show the inspiration from the grandmother of Danish electronic music who insisted that all sounds are equally valid.

kate carr melds the exquisite details of her field recordings with an ephemeral approach to the song. this australian has relocated herself to london after many trips around the globe. with each orbiting journey, she has collected innumerable sounds from the urbane to the aqueous and from the frenetic to the sublime, contextualizing all of these into compositions rippling with primordial melodies through guitar, piano, and electronics. the story surrounds us follows her highly acclaimed albums i had myself a nuclear spring (first released on her own flaming pines imprint in 2015) and carr's debut for helen scarsdale in 2016, it was a time of laboured metaphors. emblematic of her work is a gentle dislocation between the environmental sounds and her drone-dub ellipses of somnambulant melody. the clatter of a frozen dock or a vibrational shimmer from rustled objects or the unintelligible whispers displaces the sense of self amidst a sea of disparate symbols and coded thought. more a travelogue in and out of one's own body than to any particular place. carr suggests "in a way, it is about restlessness, an uncomfortable tossing and turning in all these many different places, a struggle somehow to forge a connection between my own internal world and all these places and persons i have encountered. i think this holds a sense of unease and strain, with both beautiful and failed moments of intimacy and connection which are made either possible or impossible in the difficult and distorted context of being away. it is quite sad, really." look to carla dal forno, alan lamb and those moments of clarity in the shapeshifting ethos from jewelled antler for neighboring sounds to kate carr's chimerical compositions.

Kate Carr / Things That Stubbornly And Resiliently Subsist Without Leave

Sounding like one of the heroin-influenced mixes created on the fly during one of Ron Hardy’s wild parties at the Muzic Box, Eduardo Unz's 'Dicky EP' is a substantial, yet mental record. Channelling the experimental philosophy found in funk-injected, '80s new wave and post-punk or the records you what you would expect to find under the disco not disco section in your local record store. It’s aggressive, trippy and completely in your face. A hard one not to admire. A record, one could definitely recommend to fans of Levan or Hardy’s edits/mixes. It would be hard not to see why, while ‘The Spell’ exudates classic, stripped-down brutal funk rock character, ‘Sleepwalker’ is drowning in inspired weirdness. From the placement of the synths that swirl at you from various directions and the dub version-like reverb and echo on those drums clapping back at you to the robotic drawling vocals. It’s a truly well-made piece of work!

Antwood (a.k.a. Canada's Tristan Douglas) returns to Planet Mu with his second album 'Sponsored Content'. The album is more reflective than his debut, last year's 'Virtuous.scr'. The relentless mood of the first album has given way to a more melodic, stripped out sound. It still shakes with speed and energy, but with more space, more moments of delicate sadness and strange cyborg pop. What comes to the fore in 'Sponsored Content' is Tristan's gift for melody, coupled with the uncanny feeling that somehow his strange music is an entire ecosystem of it’s own. It's best explained by Tristan himself:

"This record was made during a very challenging year. Some of these challenges were for the best, some were not, most were both, others were neither. The music is inextricably tied to these events, whether I like it or not, and I’ve begun peeking out from behind my self-imposed veil of heavy conceptualization; revealing things about myself that my previous album Virtuous.scr didn’t."   "In the past year, I found that ASMR, which I had previously used as a source of foley in my music, was a fairly effective sleep aid. I’d been using the videos in this way for a few months, when I noticed a popular ASMR YouTuber announced a plan to incorporate ads into her videos; quiet, subtle ads, woven into the content. What bothered me about this was that these ads would target viewers, such as myself, during times of semi lucid vulnerability. This disturbed me, and I unsubscribed."

"Sponsored Content explores this idea of subversive advertisement, at least superficially. It’s obviously about the ubiquity of ads and the commodification of online content. The unlikely placement of ads in the music aims to force the listener to become hyper-aware of being advertised to rather than passively internalizing it. But after the record was finished, it became undeniable that really it wasn’t so much a “concept record” about advertisement; it’s as much about intentionally devaluing the things I’ve invested myself into, and over-complicating my work. When I realized this, I considered taking the ads out, and playing the music straight. But I left the record as it is: honest, flawed, with a little humour, and slightly up its own ass."

"I collaborated with El Popo Sangre (a.k.a. Paulin Rogues) for the visuals after he showed me his short film “Fantasy” which used several tracks from Virtuous.scr. He and his team at UNICORN added a depth to the project I could never have done on my own."

BKV013 is 7 inches of infectious, Osaka-matured, aquatic dub from 7FO. 7FO-san has been in touch with Bokeh for over a year and kindly showed them round Kyoto on the BKV Japan world tour (we ate a baby squid that had a boiled egg where the brain used to be - crazy).

This is 7FO’s first proper wax outing after homegrown albums made local waves with his fusion of Japanese new age and dub miniatures. Previous albums also had mastering credits by Bokeh alumni and Osaka mixing desk alchemist Kabamix.

2016 saw 7FO reach wider audiences with Water Falls Into A Blank, a cassette and multi-media project via RVNG Intl’s Commend See series. Bandcamp user Standard Grey summed it up best:

“If Joe Meek lived on to collaborate with Harry Hosono and Inoyama Land and make idiosyncratic dubbed out Japanese Minyo and off-world colony exotica... “

‘Water Vapour’ features the enigmatic Sea Urchin - the duo of Francesco Cavaliere (on FX) and Leila Hasan (on otherworldly vocals). They’ve released an LP for Belgian imprint Kraak and Francesco notched a 2016 highlight with his solo LPs on Hundebiss.
