“Time is a social construct” 

…You’ve probably heard before. But what exactly does that mean? Zion Cartä’s Zocial Contruct EP dances around with the ideology that time, in itself, is a concept constructed by our society. Like he says on ‘F4LLING IN REVERSE’, “On that Z timin so I’m always runnin late”. A young Zion reflects on his inability to arrive places in a timely manner, and suggests that his disregard for others’ time is not an underlying factor for him, as the time he’s running on isn’t physically present, in reality. He then uses the concept of time to his advantage in the outro ‘ZBNATI’ where he states “We been vibin on the low, but it’s time for me to go”. Zion continues to display his understanding for the concept & his manipulation of its existence sonically; Like the arpeggiating radar-like synths on the intro ‘PARIS’ or the seemingly changing pace on “22Z” with P Boy. Zion ultimately does give in to the societal pressures and accepts the concept of time for what it is; sampling a Rick Rubin soundbite from an interview with Kendrick Lamar where he states “…the universe has a way of like… the timing of it, is not really on our control” and addressing the comment directly by mumbling “Well, this the timing that I’m on” into the beat drop. Zion shows us that he may respect the reality of time, but he’s not looking to adhere to it at this moment.

Zocial Construct (EXTENDED)

In this project, emotionally unavailable problem child & composer Zion Cartä goes deeper into the romantic troubles foreshadowed in his previous EP, Zocial Construct, expanding on his confliction between finding both love & a sense of self identity. With the opening adlibs “lately you been had me fucked up” on ‘First World Problemz’ , & the depiction of a one sided relationship with drugs on ‘Stargirl’, He gives us a look into the most vulnerable parts of his mind & artistic journey. The title “2018” symbolizes the year when Z established a deep connection with both music & the certain individual(s) who contributed to the inspiration behind the project’s composition. In the short time frame the album took to write, Zion was led to display real & raw emotion into every minute detail of the production. From the innate vocal inflections feeding deeper into the concept of emotional vulnerability, to the reverberated snares symbolizing the lasting effects of repeated emotional damage, saturated & reversed guitar riffs played by Evan Briand representing the backward progression of a relationship, a vibrant & heartfelt vocals performed by Brozayy, the ambient & weightless feeling of the Alex Reid coproduced track 3… all give life to a bigger vision of emotional rollercoasters and a sense of unsureness.

“My apologies”

A bonus extension of Zion Cartä’s ‘2018’ EP, Zion digs some deeper cuts into his wounds & presents the mess left behind for him to clean up. With extra tracks like ‘Healing’ where he opens up to the realities of needing to heal from his complicated past or on ‘Somewhere’ where he anticipates his past reckless & narcissistic behavior leading him towards a downward spiral, in which he is unsure of the possible outcome, Zion chooses to address more of the conflicts that may corrupt relationships or hinder his ability to form new ones. Featuring a cover photo (photographed by Françoise Terilus) where a significant other manages to gain access to Zion’s laptop, where these very tracks are located, with a smirk that tells it all. Altogether, this project carries a heavy weight of stories, emotions, & instrumentation that gives off a calm, dormant vibe. Good for those late nights & early mornings. There’s lessons of love & hate from front to back that resonate with many others who have experienced turbulent romances. And for those who are just looking for some head bops, Side B includes all the catchy instrumentals from the heart.
