As a strong believer in program music, I was interested to work with Orwell’s story in a musical setting. I felt that the dystopian and unsettling nature of the story was a perfect way to help expand my harmonic vocabulary. The passionate love story between Winston and Julia was also very well suited for the romantic style of melody which I enjoy writing. Those sections provide contrast to the dissonant and harsh themes of the oppressive Party and Big Brother. The attached recording is from the premiere performance, and the piece is scored for Clarinet in A, Viola, and Piano.

This song references real events from the final Sunday of the program, such as singing in the choir at mass, and meeting people at the local resturant Cantine D’amours. It has some melancholy at the approaching end of the trip. I chose to use "dernière" instead of "dernier" because I felt the word was better suited for the melody. I had to write a 12-tone piece for piano as a student years ago.  I hated it then, and I still do now.  That said, I decided to challenge myself and see if there was a way to make 12-tone sound "listenable," at least for myself.  So, I pulled out the score and somehow turned a 1.5 minute piano piece into this 7+ minutes of orchestral music.  It's still the same 12-tone piece (notes in exactly the same order), but I've hidden it in a larger overlay now.

Ryan Duffy's (he/him/his) unique music has been described as dramatic, very expressive, and even polystylistic. With a strong emphasis on melody, Ryan aims to create music that is easily accessible and enjoyable by all while still retaining compositional merit. A wide variety of musical influences are drawn upon in Ryan's works, ranging from ragtime to Richard Strauss. Ryan enjoys writing music with a narrative in programmatic pieces such as his 1984 trio. He is currently the Music Research and Composition Representative on student council for the second consecutive year. Ryan is currently a BMus candidate in Music Composition at Western University and has won awards for various works through the faculty's composition competition.
