Abby Echiverri (@echiverri) is a multi-talented producer, musician, DJ, VJ and sound engineer based in Brooklyn, NY. 
Since discovering her music via "Ab Initio" (her 2018 EP on @thebunkerny), our collective have been followers and fans of Abby and the refined yet vibrantly contrasting qualities of her sound. 

Always looking ahead, Abby's explorative approach has a knack of finding intelligent interplays between elements; groove and psychedelic abstraction, lushness and angularity. But most compelling is the naturally hopeful quality that underpins much of her work, providing a sense of freedom and playfulness. 

Needless to say, we're very excited to welcome Abby onto the Patterns of Perception imprint for our third release - her "Deformation" EP. 

And so, Abby Echiverri's Patterns of Perception 113 is a celebration. For this, she has prepared a special hybrid live/DJ set which both channels and expands on the energy and spirit from her release. Bold, diverse rhythms thrum within a kaleidoscopic haze. Sleek energy escalates, approaching catharsis. A cosmic radiance shifts, glancing ever upward.

Patterns of Perception 113 - Abby Echiverri

"Soundscapes reveal a lot about how people think and behave." The field recordist and musician talks about listening culture, repatriating African sounds and his new album with The Bug.

Today's conversation moves away from the dance floor, focusing instead on the soft, ambient soundscapes of the Berlin-based musician Joseph Kamaru—AKA KMRU—whose work has been featured at festivals like CTM, Mutek, Atonal, Horst Music and Arts, Dekmantel, and Unsound; concert halls like The Barbican; and major galleries and site-specific installations around the world. 

Kamaru moved to Europe from Nairobi, where he first became interested in music production, and field recordings specifically. As a graduate student in the sonic arts, he learned that the majority of the discourse around sound art practices is specific to Western Eurocentric or occidental ways of thinking. He's since embarked on a mission to use field recording as a means of repatriating African identities that are often left out of institutional archives and grapple with the legacy of colonialism. 

In this RA Exchange, Kamaru reflects on the sociopolitical angle of his work, and his observation that listening, by its very nature, is never neutral. He also talks about how civilisation and technology has changed our collective listening habits; how sound sources beyond the human hearing range make their way into his work with the use of electromagnetic microphones; and his new album, Disconnect, made with the musician Kevin Richard Martin (AKA The Bug). Chinese-German artist @samgoku has a distinctive take on techno that draws on his own Asian heritage and blends it with contemporary electronics. Across two sublime albums for Atomnation and Permanent Vacation, he has infused his fluid rhythms with gorgeous melodies and ambient haze, traditional Eastern instruments and ethereal moods. This summer, he debuted on the Dekmantel label with four tracks of unconventional techno that marry the physical with the emotional in exceptional style.

There are plenty of similar contrasts in this week's mix, which is an almost two-hour dive into his sound world. It is a deep and compelling blend of supple rhythms that are always subtly shifting. His pristine selections take in dubby and cavernous grooves, tripped-out minimal details and stylish techno cuts that always come with plenty of colour and high-definition designs which lend the whole thing a futurist edge but very human soul.

"I'm a noodler." The vaunted experimental producer and DJ discusses his playful approach to engaging with philosophy and making art live at Atonal's OPENLESS in Berlin. 

British artist Lee Gamble has long been captivating listeners with high concept dance music. A loyal affiliate of Kode9's Hyperdub label, Gamble—whose work sits somewhere at the intersection of philosophy, computer music and sound art—has been building weird and wonderful musical worlds that have shot him to experimental stardom since the early 2010s. In this RA Exchange recorded live from Hard Wax at the one-off event Atonal OPENLESS, Gamble meditates on his penchant for eschewing conventions, beginning with growing up in the countercultural, working class hub of Birmingham.

Gamble reflects on the first time he experienced what's called "future shock," a reference to a book by the same name written by sci-fi author Alvin Toffler. This set him on the pursuit of finding and making music that had a similarly bizarre quality. Gamble isn't just a producer but an avid admirer and connoisseur of critical theory, and he also discusses the thinkers who have informed his production (and even his approach to DJing), as well as his recent interest in the ethics and applications of AI and deep fakes, which he explores in a touching full-length, Models. In celebration of his latest soundtrack for Naqqash Khalid's directorial debut, In Camera, Warp alumni and celebrated producer Clark presents a cinematic soundscape in his Bleep mix selection, an aural long panning shot moving across films and composers both legendary and modern classic in status. Featuring Popol Vuh (Heart Of Glass), Howard Shore (Videodrome) alongside Disasterpiece (It Follows) and Cristobal Tapia de Veer (Utopia) to name a few, while further highlighting the juxtaposition in a bold move cutting the themes for both Solaris films next to each other.

“Really enjoyed compiling this mix of OST stuff I'm rather fond of. Yes it starts with an 8 minute track. But it's Popol Vuh and it has one of the most gorgeous end sections ever. It was interesting hearing the two Solaris themes next to each other. It's obvs more trendy to be all "oh I prefer the original Solaris score- and all the deleted stuff that only 3 people on Earth have heard" but I actually really like the Martinez version as well. It was interesting to me hearing the complete shift in timbre that 30 years of evolved music making tools bring-The slick slightly airlocked, clean layers of Martinez contrasting with the Artymev glowing, encrusted analogue 70's organs burnt to tape. But the emotional space feels similar.” - Clark

Ryoma is a track maker and DJ who is well known in the Japanese underground. He started his career as a musician in the early 90’s. He has had a lot of experience in a variety of underground bands as a guitarist and vocalist. He then started to participate in the club music scene playing live and DJing, and was nominated as a finalist of the Roland Groove Competition in 2000. He currently plays an active part in the Kansai scene, playing live and DJing in Kyoto and Osaka, and organizing the locally famous event Undermine at Kyoto’s legendary Club Metro. His strong livesets have an excellent reputation and he has played with prolific domestic and international artists including Juan Atkins aka Model 500, Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Terrence Parker, Laurent Garnier, Stefan Goldmann, Andy Vaz, Gunne, DJ3000, Rennie Foster, Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito(Kompakt), Rondenion,  and many more.  In 2009 he started to run his own record shop “Transit Records Kyoto” and as of next year started to run his own label, Transit Records.  The first release was Detroit legend Terrence Parker’s “Beautiful Life” 12” with remixes by myself (Ryoma Sasaki) and another Kyoto artist, DJ Itoi. And second release was the own title "Transit EP"  including a remix of his track by Tagträumer² (Black Fox Music/Rauschzeit). Now the label is preparing for 5th vinyl release, will be out in spring.
Until now, he did the Germany tour 8 times, played at not only  famous clubs like Tresor. Berlin, Cookies, but also many underground clubs like Golden Gate.  

90年代初頭より本格的に音楽活動を開始。現在、主に、Live PA/Djとして活動中。 2007年、 カナダのレーベル・Dirty Worksより、チャートで上位を獲得し、長期にわたってチャート・イン するロングラン・ヒットを記録したアルバム"Calling of Amon"をリリース。そして、その後も コンスタントに楽曲をリリースし、2011年よりVinyl レーベル・Transit Records Kyotoをス タート。ファースト・リリースとして、デトロイトのレジェンドDJの一人、Terrrence Parkerの 作品を、2013年にはレーベルの第2弾として、自身の作品"Transit EP" (Tagtrumer Remix収 録)をリリースした。2015年には、Hiroshi Watanabe氏とのカップリングEP "The Bridge of Sounds EP"、そして本年、ベルリンのアーティストBee Lincolnとともに"Transition EP"を リリースした。2011年から現在に至るまで、計10回のドイツでのDJツアーを行い、テクノ・ミニマル系最高峰ク ラブのTresor. Berlinをはじめ、Wilde Renate、GoldenGate、Cookies、Chalet等々、ベ ルリンの主要クラブに出演している。また、フランクフルト、ハンブルグ等のアンダーグラウンドな クラブやハイデルベルク郊外の千人規模の山頂でのフェス等、幅広く出演している。また、2014 年、南西ドイツ放送(Sdwestfunk)の番組で、自身とTransit Records Kyotoが取り上げられ 約30分の番組として放送された。６月、ベルリンの名門レーベルLebensfreudeのGunneとZuckermannのリミックスを収録した 次回Vinylリリース作品(TR-005)をリリース。
