The Naked King is the final chapter in my « King Of Blends » trilogy of mix tapes (the previous instalments are 2016’s 100% RADIO HITS and 2017’s Impressions). I wanted to explore once again the world of blends and giving iconic pop pieces as well as classic underground tunes a new context by layering them with more modern and/or obscure tracks. I wanted it to be about finding beauty in anachronisms and considering time not as a line but as a dot where Squarepusher, Lil Flip, Rod Lee, Lorenzo Senni and Finn’s music are happening simultaneously. I wanted to go against the rules of progression in DJ sets, while maintaining a fluidity that resists tempo and key changes. It is a stream of consciousness that ends up being more informed by the construction of a Lil Wayne verse than the typical temporality of your conservative DJ’s latest techno mix. Every track builds on the flow of the previous one played, but then i realized it went from a jungle track to a Houston rap acapella to a grime beat to an accelerated Miami club track to MF Doom, and i thought it was fine, because it’s all the same music to me and it all makes perfect sense. Lots of tracks are played at the wrong speed, things slow down and accelerate again, and the ride itself, no matter how chaotic, becomes the message. In the year when every one is acting surprised that t’s acceptable again for DJs to « play anything », i wanted to show the world what « play anything » truly means.

After a few years bubbling under, Cera Khin could well be about to breakthrough. And few deserve it more than the Tunisian born, Berlin based artist as she is busy on many different fronts, from hosting radio shows on NTS and Noods to running her own LazyTapes label. It has put out music she has made with Ossia as well as solo 12”s from Peder Mannerfelt, but her has not as yet showcased the full breadth of her tastes which range from Afro to Egyptian grooves, grime, rave and ambient.

This mix is just as wild and full on from the off, but more directly focussed on the dance floor. High energy techno ranges from mutant to acid to hardcore, with corrugated ghetto funk and euphoric rave all mix in with tight and technical skills. It’s a blistering introducing to how Khin sounds in the club and is a great way to kick start your week.
