Hoshina Anniversary returns to MUSAR Recordings under a new cloak, Shifting Gears.

Toyko’s Hoshina Anniversary has risen to particular prominence in recent years with his self-titled brand of ‘Wa- techno’. Stylistically fusing traditional Japanese instrumentation with Chicago and Detroit sensibilities, his works have found homes on ESP Institute, Young Marco’s Safe Trip and Amsterdam-based MUSAR Recordings. 

Landing on the latter, MUSAR, little over a year ago with ‘Zangai’ EP, Hoshina returns under a new cloak, Shift- ing Gears, to present ‘Evil’ EP.

Named after the 1975 ‘Gears’ LP of jazz and hard bop organist, Johnny Hammond, the Shifting Gears moniker focuses heavily on principles of Jazz and raw musicianship, with a continued exploration of machine-reared club sounds. How the two can take shape as one. 

Across ‘Evil’ EP, Hoshina’s native culture remains, as heard on ‘Miyatsukomaro’, where traditional Japanese strings harmonise with crisp hats and jazz keys. Inspired by the early works of keyboardist and composer, Bob James, all is underpinned by intrinsic Chicago synth work.

A recurrent theme throughout, the Chicago vibe most notably takes hold on title track ‘Evil’. An insidious march, the floor-pummeling kick and shoulder-tickling toms marry seamlessly with dracula-esque chords and dizzying piano arrangements. Nodding to the mischievous bassist Jaco Pastorius of jazz fusion band, Weather Report.

Informed by the pacey creations of a revered duo, The Brecker Brothers and the 70’s rock music that sound- tracked Hoshina’s youth, opener, ‘Senor Senorita’ wraps swathing reverb around a raucous melody and jiving percussion. Meanwhile, the seedy ‘Syndicate’ closes out amid eerie synth sneers and quirky, funk-flecked modulations.

After making his debut on Amsterdam's MUSAR Recordings last year with his Zangai EP, Tokyo-based producer Hoshina Anniversary returns under a new alias, Shifting Gears. Taking his name from Johnny Hammond's 1975 Gears LP, the moniker sees him draw on the principles of jazz and raw musicianship, which are blended with the club sounds he's become synonymous with on his releases for ESP Institute and Safe Trip. Across his new EP, Evil, he continues his use of traditional Japanese instruments, this time matching them with jazz keys and bass lines, all underpinned by nods to Chicago house.

He was a man who did not see life with his own eyes, but comprehended it only through books and was doubly dangerous in that he convinced himself of his sincerity. He unfeignedly took his lust for exalted feelings, weakness - for the inconstancy of artistic nature, laziness - for philosophical calmness. His mind, vulgar in its attempts at refinement, perceived everything in a slightly exaggerated form, vaguely, through the gilded fog of sentimentality. He lied, not knowing that he was lying, and when others reproached him for this, he said that lies are beautiful. In short, he was an idealist.

After he featured on Various # 2, the Russian artist Yssue is back on KUMP with three, slightly incantational, Industrial/Tribalistic tracks. In this EP, Dmitry Nekrotkov explores Nature and expresses his vision of the bonds which Mankind shares with It.
What's more? Two remixes. Ayaz, an artist from Azerbaïdjan and founder of the Yalançi label, delivered a Dub-Techno remix which will turn your brain upside down before chopping it in tiny bits.
The second remix was made by the Duo DJ PG, from Lauzanne (Switzerland). The two pals, both members of the group "La Sacrée Déter" revisited the track "Lust" adding a Psyche-dubik touch to it. Perfect for a matinee on your sofa.
"My music is often a reflection of the state in which I am at a certain period of my life, since I grew up from a musical punk scene, this often involves a certain set of means of expression. In essence, I am in an endless struggle to express some quite lively and human emotions through the cold and artificial world of electronic sounds. That is why there is a lot of melody and sometimes even drama in my music, and this is why I'm often got bored with a static music.
This EP is called "Naturalist", a terms that defines a person who has devoted his life to the study of nature and its kingdoms. This directly relates to my strong belief that the further society advances, the more people are losing touch with nature, something that is real and to which they all belong." - Dmitry Nekrotkov.

DECENNIUM06 - /DL/MS/ (Frustrated Funk, TRUST)

The 6th edition of our DECENNIUM series comes courtesy of Dan Lodig and Martin Sovinz, better known collectively as /DL/MS/.

The Viennese pair started self-releasing original Techno and Electro on their own Pomelo label in 2016, which led to attention from some of the elite producers and labels around Europe.  They have since released a string of quality EP's via heavyweight label TRUST, and via Electro royals Frustrated Funk, which have cemented their reputable status in the scene.

As well as running their new label Vigram, you can find /DL/MS/ performing their reputable live set around the Vienna circuit and beyond. For their DECENNIUM set they have produced a rare DJ set, planned and mastered as meticulously as their live set. The track list is a thing of beauty, with unrestricted twists and turns from Electro, Detroit and Ghetto-Tech, to Techno, Acid and Breaks. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Keep your ears to the ground for @dl-ms future movements.
