From Caterina Barbieri's debut album Vertical (Important Records/Cassauna, 8 October 2014) composed for Buchla modular synthesizer and vocals.

This version of Undular is a stereo mix from the original 8 channel one.

Vertical is a meditation on primary waveforms and the polyrhythm of harmonics in synthetic sounds, stretching the boundaries between drone, minimalism and techno. Barbieri's minimalist focus arises from the exploration of the stratigraphic potential of voltage-controlled sequencers, in terms of polyrhythm and polyphony. Employing synthesis, psychoacoustics and repetition as key concepts, the italian composer stylizes the dancing of wave cycles in severe geometries of time and space.
All the tracks were played, recorded and produced in Stockholm, at EMS (Electroacoustic Music Studios) and KMH (Royal University of Music) in Summer 2013.

Of Surfaces suggests an incremental process of reduction. Compositional focus placed in the space between sounds and silence. Barely audible events negotiated through surfaces-implied sounds heard through the conduit of a surface, sounds in another room, in between and beyond surface levels create the fabric of this work. of surfaces is a space between the Chartier’s pointalist series and the layered orchestrations of decisive forms exploring the relationship between sound, silence, focus, and the act of listening.

Of Surfaces offers three comparably minimal compositions.The title piece throbs and pulses gently between the stereo channels, subject once again to abrupt cuts. "Variance" purrs, sizzles then rises to a quiet judder. "Composition" hums then enacts a low-key drama : busy, almost cluttered by Chartier's standards. Headphone and closed eyes help to meet his demands and to disclose rewards.

Subject to Drift has been recorded in October 2015 with a Roland TB303 and a TR606 running through a computer programmed with algorithms for digital signal processing. Like a prism breaking up the light into its spectral components, the computer based processing dissects the sound of the Roland boxes enhancing a higher resolution insight into the sound matter. By processing the TB303 and TR606 through many layers of delay lines is indeed possible to explore polyrhythms, therefore unfolding the spectral complexity wrapped in a single pattern and addressing the listener perspective towards the microscopic details of the sound spectrum. 

The TB303 is one of the most influential and iconic musical instruments of the last 30 years, having played a critical role in the definition of the so called “acid” sound and being involved in the development of dance music genres. Being at the core of different dance music aesthetics, the possibility to interact with a pattern based memory and a limited set of parameters is one the TB303’s design feature that mostly inspired the research underlying this work.
