WordUP Tape 2 Mixed By Sabelo Soko

An Ode To Imfundamakhwela celebrates the tenacity of a whirligig beetle. It finds the characteristics of an amateur extremely essential for the survival of humanity in a survivalist society such as Kwa Nyama Kayi Pheli. 

Imfundamakhwela is a Zulu term meaning amateur. Imfundamakhwela is also the naming word for a whirligig beetle of the Coleoptera Gyniridae family. Ibhungane lamanzi. Okay.?! Emakhaya amagrootmane athumela those who can’t whistle to catch these fast moving water beetles with the promise of teaching them the art of bending the wind. The instruction is that, upon catching les’khwishikhwishi intwana must place it on the tip of their tongue and let it bite. In the bite lies the invaluable art of the whistle.  A skill that can become handy umasekunyiwiwa. But-mara-kodwa, who can catch imfundamakhwela in its element? 
Only a gullible amateur would even dare to attempt. Kuhlwe emini. Imfundamakhwela is gifted with half a dozen feet and 4 eyes. It boasts a clear vision above and below its habitat. Uma amanzi aba rough imfundamakhwela goes under. Inesgubhu somoya for that. Imfundamakhwela is a community driven beetle. Constantly surrounded by its kind. Even when the water cakes out, nothing changes, phela Imfundamakhwela inezimpiko, a coat covering the air bubble. So when (manmade) nature happens, imfundamakhwela rides the wind until until. Imfundamakhwela is a master survivalist. It lives first ukufa izokubona later. Imfundamakhwela is an amateur. Itching to learn and grow. Willing to unlearn and adapt. Imfundamakhwela aches for what it doesn’t know. It needs knowledge to move. It yearns for the truth and the nature of the future. Imfundamakhwela is aware: beyond the ego and the bragging gowns, professionals are just as clueless. No one expertly knows what the actual point of this breathing reality really is. Siyaphila nje. The post keeps shifting. Rapidly. From needs and wants to needs and wants. Imfundamakhwela imehlomane nge attention, ayiphel' umoya. Imfundamakhwela thrives on winging it confidently. For tomorrow must come. And Pass. Imfundamakhwela ifast.

An Ode To Imfundamakhwela

Following his seminal project, Umkhondo, The-Word-Lord, self-styled-DalaWhatYouMustDaily-mumbler, King-Keep-It-Bloody-Boutique-The First, returns riding a really nostalgic torrent. 
Spin Venek Radio Experience sees Sabelo Soko revisiting a childhood dream of being a radio host. The concept gives Soko  the freedom to explore themes such as self reliance, knowledge of self and urgent social issues such as narcotics and Imali sans sounding prescriptive.
A father of boys - in a world that is quickly forgetting values like respect and the care for human breath - Soko goes memory diving and lands on sharp images that do not only cut deep but also seek ways to dress the gaping wound left by the so called new normal.
"Kunezinto ngisemncane..." Soko recalls "...abancane babehlonipha abadala... abadala nabancane behlonipha impilo, bezotha uma kunesifo..." a few lines later there is an admission "...namhlanje umhlaba ushintshile..."
It is this notion of a changed world, that holds Soko's pen throughout this project. Like a parental urge, of sorts, to leave a net for the children to harness or to discard at will.
"...kazi mathambo engabelwe wona nophelelaphi? nginganifiseli nomhamuko, wentuthu engenalangabi..."
