Story

The Beginning
No cry for love…
Clara and Daniel were a young couple, full of plans. They liked to walk through the city at sunset, share songs in the kitchen, and dream of trips they hadn't yet taken. Everything seemed open, like a horizon without limits.

One day, the word ALS entered their lives. At first, it was a medical whisper, a diagnosis that seemed foreign. But it soon became a certainty… Clara would have to live with an illness that would gradually limit her movements.
Daniel looked at her then with a newfound strength. There was no fear in his eyes, but a silent promise… “You won't walk alone.”

The Shared Journey
No cry for love…
The disease progressed, and with it, their routines changed. Clara could no longer button her blouse, and Daniel learned to do it delicately, as if each button were a petal.

When the spoon slipped from her hands, he would catch it and bring it to her lips. It wasn't a gesture of pity, but of complicity... eating together became an intimate ritual, where each bite was an act of love.
Clara, though her muscles were losing strength, retained her laughter. And that laughter was a beacon... illuminating the afternoons, reminding Daniel that life was still beautiful, even in fragility.

The Language of Love

The love between them reinvented itself. It no longer depended on grand words, but on small gestures...
• A look that said more than a thousand words.

• A caress on the forehead that soothed weariness.

• A song listened to in silence, where the notes spoke for them.

Daniel discovered that true greatness lay in the everyday... in patiently washing her hair, in tenderly drying her hands, in holding her when the world seemed too heavy. Clara, for her part, gifted him the strength of her spirit. Although her body weakened, her presence was more intense than ever. She taught him that dignity is never lost, that beauty can reside even in vulnerability.

Time continued its course. Clara needed more and more help, but she was never alone. Daniel became the guardian of her light, ensuring that each day had music, companionship, and meaning.

When the time came to say goodbye, there was no tragedy. There was silence, tenderness, and gratitude. Clara closed her eyes, held by Daniel's hand, and he felt that it wasn't an ending, but a transformation… the love they had shared didn't fade, it became a luminous memory.

Epilogue
No cry for love…
Daniel continued walking through the city at dusk. Clara was no longer by his side, but every gesture they had shared remained alive within him. When he buttoned his shirt, when he heard a song, when he looked at the sky, he felt her presence.

Clara and Daniel's story wasn't one of pain, but of love. Proof that even in fragility, life can be magnificent. Because true strength lies not in muscles, but in a heart that gives itself without measure.

PROGRAM NOTES
Gruesome creatures have always fascinated me, so when Duo Scorpio asked me if I would be interested in writing them a new piece, and their only request was that I incorporate the scorpion as a theme, I was happy to oblige.

The first movement, Trinidad Scorpion, is inspired by a fiery red pepper called the Trinidad Scorpion "Butch T", currently the hottest pepper in the world. It measures a blistering 1,463,700 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). (A typical jalapeno pepper measures around 5,000 SHU, while a habanero pepper measures up to 350,000 SHU.) The tempo is appropriately marked con fuoco, and the contrapuntal middle section is subtly infused with Calypso rhythms.

Promenade à deux is the title of the second movement, borrowed from a colorful description of the scorpion's complex courting and mating ritual. This begins when the male and female locate and identify each other using a mixture of pheromones and vibrational communication. The courtship starts with the male grasping the female's pedipalps with his own; the pair then perform a "dance" called the promenade à deux. The courtship ritual can involve several other behaviours such as juddering and a cheliceral kiss, in which the male's claw-like mouthparts grasp the female's. In some cases, the male will inject her with a small amount of venom, perhaps as a means of pacifying her. Once mating is complete, they separate. The male generally retreats quickly, most likely to avoid being cannibalised by the female, although sexual cannibalism is infrequent with scorpions. Scorpions glow fluorescent under black lights, so I imagine the scorpions basking in a fluorescent afterglow after completing their courtship.

The third movement, The Tale of Orion, is inspired by an ancient Greek myth. According to legend, Orion boasted to goddess Artemis and her mother, Leto, that he would kill every animal on earth. Although Artemis was known to be a hunter herself, she offered protection to all creatures. Artemis and her mother sent a scorpion to deal with Orion. The pair battled and the scorpion killed Orion. The contest was apparently lively enough to catch Zeus's attention, so he raised the scorpion to heaven and afterwards, at the request of Artemis, did the same for Orion. This served as a reminder for mortals to curb their excessive pride. A second version describes Orion and Artemis growing fond of each other. Learning of this development, Apollo, Artemis's twin brother, grew angry and sent a scorpion to attack Orion. After Orion was killed, Artemis asked Zeus to put Orion up in the sky. So every winter Orion hunts in the sky, but every summer he flees as the constellation of the scorpion approaches.
