This is wonderful Sabrina! I read the words you wrote in the description... I live near Hameln and I know the Story of the "Rattenfänger" and of course, the dark history of my country after 1939... Your "Still ist`s im Wald" reminds me a bit of Gustav Mahler`s "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" in its Style. Do you speak german? Some of my family members emigrated also to the USA in the early 20th century. They where/are  Reverends...

This is a very impressive piece. You do an especially good job of setting the text to music, which in my experience is one of the most difficult aspects of composing.

An anxiety dream is an unpleasant dream which can be more disturbing than a nightmare. Anxiety dreams are characterized by the feelings of unease, distress, or apprehension in the dreamer upon waking. General anxiety is a negative effect of anxiety dreams. However, Anxiety dreams have an important function. When the ego has been overworked, often the only way it can reset is when one wakes up. Anxiety dreams will build until the dreamer is forced to wake and thus let the ego refocus.

Anxious Dreams is musical depiction of this very process. The piece begins with an ethereal solo motif that cycles between the flute line and the oboe line providing a dream like essence that slowing devours itself into a prominent baseline. This pattern continues throughout the course of the piece with different presentations of the beginning motif as well as varying melodic material diverging into both a development and a coda. Furthermore, the notion of the distorted dream is contrapuntally depicted throughout Anxious Dreams in all the voices of the trio.

Raznick's 2017 album release, Memory Maze, is musical journal detailing pivotal life experiences, musically influenced by the regions he has lived in: Argentina, Spain and Colorado. Much like mazes, Raznick's pieces have twists and turns throughout intricate passages. Many songs are designed like a puzzle, becoming increasingly challenging throughout, but with a solution at the end.

Program notes:
Tonight's premiere (4/12) coincides with Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day). Still ist's im Wald is intended to honor both my great-grandfather, and the legacy of Romanian Jewry.
My great-grandfather Isadore emigrated to the United States in 1920 from Boroutz-Zastawna, Austria (later part of Romania, and now Ukraine). Some (but not all) of his family members also made it to America before the Jewish community in Zastawna was obliterated in the Holocaust.
Julius Wolff's Der Rattenfänger von Hameln (1876) was one of Isadore's favorite books; he knew it well enough to write sections out from memory, as I discovered recently in his old letters and papers. My piece incorporates an excerpt from this book, as well as Klezmer modes and symbolic quotation of the well-known Yiddish tune "Rumania, Rumania." The overall structure of the piece is meant to illustrate the pressure on Jewish immigrants to assimilate. Over the course of the work, modal inflections and the emphasis on solo playing give way to a more unified, tonal sound. The German poetry is sung beginning to end, while excerpts spoken in English are interpolated in the opposite order; this is meant to convey disillusionment, loss of identity, and the paradox of traveling so far just to start over in a new life.
