The New Bike

Beidh rath ar Éirinn version 2

I sent a bagpipe version of my irish piece "Beidh rath ar Éirinn" to the exceptionally talented, also irish songwriter Johnny Mc Farlane and asked if he could come up with some lyrics. What felt like 10 minutes later, he sent me a  recording. His first spontaneous interpretation, a brilliant ballad, changed the character of the piece, but had a very special appeal that I also associate with the more rebellious side of Ireland.
Musically, I was fascinated because the originally cheerful, lovely piece now served as a carrier of rather sad, stirring emotions. (The listener can experience this magical effect for himself if he listens directly to the next track "Beidh rath ar Éirinn" version 2, after this one.)
Several attempts to improve this song musically failed, because that certain something that appeared spontaneously in this first recording, the first impression, the first feeling, was suddenly missing with all the "improvements". 
Irritated by this effect, we wanted to let some Irish turf grow over it and hold off on releasing what felt like an a little bit  "unfinished" piece.

But, since the Ukraine war surprised us all, the topic of the song became very topical and Johnny and I decided to take a stand against war and for solidarity with its victims, especially women and children.

This is an Anti-war song, set in Ireland during 1916 Easter Rising and referencing the song "When Johnny comes Marching home" , except in many cases Johnny didn't come marching home. The story in the song is told from the eyes of a woman who is standing in a station waiting for her beloved to return but in her heart she knows that isn't going to happen. This song is dedicated to all the people in the Ukraine fighting for their homes, their freedom and for their Lives to let them know that we are praying for them and that we support them in their struggle for freedom.

She stood with the crowd, to see if Johnny came marching home.
As the solders disembarked the army train, she stood alone.
She held her breath and she clutched her heart and she prayed in the pouring rain, that sweet johnny would come home and that she'd see him once again.

with his Head held high and his shoulders back;  she ran through the morning rain.
With tears in her eyes she called his name, " Johnny are you home again"?
But all she heard, was the army band, as it played a sad refrain.

And all she heard, was a whisper on the wind and all she felt, was pain,
for she knew in her heart, that johnny didn’t make it home and she'd never see his sweet sweet face again.

As the station emptied, she stood on the platform all alone,
for Johnny didn’t make it back, poor lad, he never made it home.
And her poor heart broke, like the rocks on the shamrock shore,
for she knew that she'd never see her Johnny anymore

She roamed the mountains and the valleys wide
She was the banshee of the night she wailed and she cried
Until the day that johnny came to take her form this land
She kissed his lips, she held him tight and then she took his hand.

In 2000, a children's orchestra took part in the "Prix de jeuness", a European music competition.
For this I composed a story of a Brazilian street child ("Manolito")consisting of 7 pieces. The "music box" was the centerpiece of the story. Manolito, the street kid finds the music box in a garbage dump looking for food. I wanted to orchestrate it "better" again, but I'm not satisfied yet. 
Warning: this version is not suitable for children's orchestras!!
