Metalheadz Platinum is back with a debut from drum n bass finest newcomer Xtrah with tracks ‘No Good’ and ‘Directive’ alongside Headz crew member and co-conspirator Mikal.

"Directive" is very much a clash between Mikal and Xtrah, it’s a bass workout that you would expect from the pair. The stepping drums are accented by drum and percussion fills adding to the uncompromising nature of the track, basses snake and contort around the drums encouraging one to screwface whilst eerie FX and strings add an element of mystery to proceedings.

Xtrah feat. Mikal - Directive

Dryft has always been a way for Mike Cadoo to experiment within the sonic terrain of electronic music.  Having started Dryft in 1999 as a side project from his then full-time gig as frontman of post-industrial amalgamate Gridlock to explore and produce re-imagined forms of Darkstep. he subsequently released the critically acclaimed album Cell. Cadoo rather fluidly arced the project into Clip-Hop territory and released the Mytotic Exyt EP (Component). After an eight year hiatus Dryft reappeared in 2012 with the Ventricle full-length (n5MD). On Ventricle Cadoo merged previous experiments in bass music with post-industrial, dirge-paced 2-step and nugaze. One, by now, could surmise that different types of bass music have been the backbone of Cadoo's work as Dryft. The new album, The Blur Vent, finds Cadoo yet again adding new textures and styles to Dryft's phonic scuffle. Beginning where its predecessor left us hanging, The album quickly launches us into some mutant after party where Drag, Future Garage, Drone and even R&B elements have been defaced to fit Cadoo's skewed vision of Dryft in 2014.

(in a live setting) sae is the delicate navigation of sonic art expression where the artist is forced to be spontaneous, aware, and evocative. He must sculpt sounds and elaborate on them by utilizing the latest in sophisticated audio equipment. An ambitious attempt to synthesize aural exploration and say something that remains ineffable. Something the human language can’t quite communicate. This is a social audio experiment. 

He must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere. The result is a performance that may lack the complex composition and textures of produced music, but it is said that those who listen will find something captured that escapes explanation.


(in a studio setting) I approach song writing and producing in a similar fashion as the live show, but in this instance I can edit and re-work and polish things off a little better. My produced music still contains many improvised elements. In a lot of cases live experiments turn into a launch pad toward an idea and often I keep some of the original inspirational live cuts in the mix. Music for me is my meditation. If I am in top form, everything else melts away and I am completely in that moment... it is here, in this moment that the music is best served with a blank mind and an spontaneous spirit.
