Expression was definitely a burden to Awka as ordinary ways of communication just never seemed enough. As time went by, this need connect with others became an obsession and a search, in which digging new and old records could be a relief or a clue. By coincidence or fate, at the age of 15 Awka moved to Munich and got in touch with german electronic music culture, making the first contact with synthesizers and experimenting a whole new world of different music styles. A blended and unique cultural background was not the only result of this life and art experience. Finally, Awka found the means to reach out to others and to get his voice heard. It was clear the words were and couldn’t be enough as what was there to be said couldn’t be understood, but only felt.

Back to his home town, in Rio de Janeiro, Awka’s plans finally came out of paper as his career had it’s definitive start. After a few solo presentations, Awka formed the “Tenth Column” duo, which’s talent lead to the famous label party RIO ME residency and to performances on renowned gigs such as D-EDGE, Club 88, Warung Tour and RAWW X ROOM. On his current solo career Awka has been part of the crew that delivered the greatest electronic music carnival party ever seen in Rio - The “Bloco Ame”, also being a flashy name in Warung Closing Summer 2019, meeting Edu Schwartz, who would soon become his actual partner in starting his label: Words Not Enough.

Awka’s purpose is now fulfilled through his tracks and productions. On a new phase, his ways of connection are being reproduced by exponential labels such as Akbal Music, Lump Records, Pipe & Pochet, Seven Villas e Warung Recordings. Not to mention his 2 reinterpretations on the english band “Elder Island” tracks, which together sum up to 600.000 plays on spotify.

The modern era of music has given us enigmas and artists of all shapes and forms who break the norm in unexpected ways. baez is one such artist who epitomizes the essence of the times. baez is creating music that pushes the envelope, igniting emotions and musical nuances that stretch the human imagination to its very limit.

Born Jason Baez, his love for collecting electronic music quickly turned into more than just a passion and became a full-on career. He was named Miami's Best DJ in 2013 by Miami New Times, which characterized him as “the hardest-working DJ in Miami.” baez also held a residency at the legendary venue, The Electric Pickle, served as a former partner in NYC-based promoter and talent agency, Bespoke Musik, and currently hosts his Fordel podcast series on Frisky Radio. 

baez has played in many countries around the world and has shared the DJ booth with some of the biggest names in the industry, such as Bedouin, Maceo Plex, Damian Lazarus, DJ Tennis, and Jamie Jones, just to name a few. He has also made waves with releases under major labels such as Nie Wieder Schlafen, Magician on Duty, Constant Circles, and LNDKHN. His remix of Urmet K & The Lazarusman’s “The Meeting,” released with Magician on Duty, peaked at #8 on Beatport’s Top 100 Deep House Chart, received a lot of plaudits from industry experts, and garnered widespread support from top DJs.

In 2020, he co-founded the record label Minds Alike with Samihe. They are cultivating a community of like-minded artists who share a similar acoustic expression within the electronic music space. The label is already gaining traction, with multiple releases all charting on Beatport’s Top 100.

His overarching ambition is to provoke thought in the minds of his listeners; baez asks the audience to take a breath, get lost in the music, and just enjoy the moment.

Sugarcane juice is the liquid extracted from pressed sugarcane. It is consumed as a beverage in many places, especially where sugarcane is commercially grown, such as in Egypt, where ADHM's roots lie.

This week's producer and DJ is known for his melodic instrumental deep house, a multicultural journey filled with hypnotic grooves, harmonies and beats. His productions are released on labels such as mirrors (Toronto) or Souksonic (Belgium). "Stay with me" is his most recent release on Lost Desert's imprint, released in August 2021. 

Moving from Toronto to Dubai just recently, ADHM took a welcome break from unpacking moving boxes and getting settled in his new base, and mixed this organic ride through current favorites and unreleased gems of his own. Delicious!

Sugarcane Juice | ADHM

No matter if playing live or compiling a mix, Floloco, or Florian with his real name, strives to create something whole. The result is hard to pigeonhole as he moves across genres although never losing his signature theme: an intense ride through electronic music; cinematic, dramatic, yet never missing that particular groove. 

The electronic music enthusiasts has his own show “Sonorous” on Frisky radio and runs Schirmchendrink, the globally regarded brand with delicious “cocktails” of underground electronic music (and, admittedly, an incredibly hard-to-pronounce name). The original concept just celebrated its 200th episode anniversary past December. 

Together with his good friend, Benoit, Florian is further part of the deep electronica duo Gimérique. After founding Schirmchendrink together in 2016, they today work in tandem to bring dreamy electronic music into the air with releases on labels such as Sound Avenue or Harabe Recordings.

Unsere Nr. 235 kommt heute von einem international bekannten DJ und Producer, welchen ich seit einer geraumen Zeit aufmerksam verfolge. Die Rede ist von dem in Toronto wohnhaften Mustafa Ismaeel. Geboren im Irak, aufgewachsen in Indien und gereift in Kanada… interkulturelle Kompetenzen hat dieser Mann definitiv in seinem alles andere als linearen Leben erworben. Nicht ohne Grund hat seine Biographie einen starken Einfluss auf seinen einzigartigen Musikstil genommen. Er selber beschreibt dies mit dem Ausloten und der Neudefinition von Grenzen. Grenzen denen er selber immer wieder aufs Neue ausgesetzt war. Und Grenzen, die er selber für sich gestalten musste.  

Das von Ihnen eingespielte Set ist eine spannende ‚afterhoureske‘ Reise ins Dickicht der melodischen, hypnotischen und teils verspielten elektronischen Musik. Angereichert mit einer Menge an Instrumental- und Vocalpassagen, verleiht er der Aufnahme einen samtweichen und vor allem sonnigen Charakter voll des positiven Gefühls. Etwas, was ich in der aktuell unsicheren Zeit gut gebrauchen kann und mich tatsächlich mit einem guten Gefühl nach dem Hören entlässt. Neben all des positiven Charakters vergisst er aber nicht die gehörige Portion an Tiefgang in seinem Set zu implementieren. Dadurch hält er gewagt, aber gekonnt, die Waage zwischen Leichtigkeit und Nachdenklichkeit. 

Schnallt euch an… Ich kann mich nur wiederholen, aber es erwartet euch eine Reise durch verspielte und hypnothische Felder, die wie gemacht für eine Afterhour sind….seid gespannt.

Interview:

What are your musical influences? What is your musical background?

My musical influences are a quite broad range of genres and artists, but
i also realize that there is many similarities and patterns that are
shared between them. For me i like meaningful music, it can be anything
from minimal house to progressive.

My background in music was mainly vocals when i was a young kid, and
then in the mid teenager years i started playing acoustic guitar and
hand drums. I was always a music collector and lover of different
somewhat underground genres like dub reggae, Indie, Hip Hop and then
elctronic music.

What makes good “afterhour”?

For me a good afterhour is about the vibe, the people and the purity and
consistency of the sound. Solid groovy sound that is somewhat minimal
and comfortable to the ears. Storytelling for an emotionally intelligent
setting.

Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about your set?

This is the first studio recorded podcast I’m putting out after more
than a year. it took me a while to make one due to traveling and studio
work so im happy to be finaly sharing this with my listeners. Hope you
enjoy this groovy afterhour journey.
