Glasgow jazz empress Rebecca Vasmant puts a dancefloor spin on the delicately composed and infectious grooves of “Momus”, by Melbourne-based jazz violist/violinist and orchestral composer, Tamil Rogeon.  

We are excited to hear the artists behind two of our favourite albums of the past year, Tamil’s ‘Son Of Nyx’ and Vasmant’s ‘With Love, from Glasgow‘. We also had the honour of premiering Tamil’s original take of “Momus”. With it being so close to our hearts, we are glad to say Rebecca's remix does not disappoint. 

On ‘Son Of Nyx’, Tamil Rogeon encompassed a swirling prism of exploratory modal jazz with his own viola playing, analogue synth lines, and Afro-Latin percussion. On ‘With Love, from Glasgow’, Vasmant brought together an incredible array of rising musicians to bring life to her vision, inspired by spiritual jazz, imbued with electronic sounds and great warmth. 

DJ & Producer Rebecca Vasmant became an instant fan of ‘Son Of Nyx’ album before it was even released after being given an exclusive listen prior to its release - and she immediately asked about remixing a track; “When I first heard the Tamil Rogeon record, I was so excited and absolutely blown away, so it was a real pleasure to be asked to work on this remix of Momus. I got together with my good friends and musicians, Emilie Boyd and Harry Weir, and they added their magic onto this new interpretation”.

Rogeon’s forthcoming EP also includes remixes from friends and collaborators Sampology (Sam Poggioli) and Prequel, alongside two previously unheard live versions of ‘Son Of Nyx’ tracks.

Now onto its fourth volume, NuNorthern Soul’s annual ‘Summer Selections' EP is fast becoming a must-check for fans of slow-motion sunshine sounds, contemporary Balearic beats and sumptuous downtempo grooves. As the label prepare to celebrate their 10th Anniversary, ‘Summer Selections Four’ showcases six “cream of the crop” tracks from an exciting release schedule, as NNS boss, Phil Cooper, cherry picks a sun-kissed platter of stunning evocative melodies, atmospheric chords and easy-going grooves.

The first track comes from James Bright, whose cut ‘Amber’ is a colourful and analogue-rich mid-tempo Balearic house outing. Next up is ‘Nana a Leon’, a gorgeous collaboration from Be.Ianuit with vocalist Marcos de la Fuente, who deliver a mixture of deep bass, twinkling pianos, sultry synth-strings, topped off with a spoken word. San Francisco’s Cole Odin offers a slow-motion sunset soundscape of ethereal chords and chiming melodies on ‘Growing’, while Gold Suite’s ‘The Cowboy’ joins the dots between jangling Americana, mid-‘80s Balearic Reggae and sun-soaked synth-pop.

Next up, making their NuNorthern Soul debut, is North Of The Island with their spaced-out, mind-altering delight, ‘I Feel’, loaded with sunset ready musical flourishes and chugging, delay-laden rhythm. And rounding off another sizzling Summer Selections excursion is ‘Smoke & Fly - a dusty, bass-heavy, picturesque chunk of Balearic dub from Ibiza-based Italian duo, Residentes Balearicos. It provides a fittingly triumphant conclusion to another essential sampler EP from NuNorthern Soul.

Throughout 2022, NuNorthern Soul’s releases will feature illustrations from Ibiza artist Emily McGuinness, who has created a series of illustrations inspired by ‘Myths Of Ibiza’ based on the folkloric tales of the White Isles. Inspirations include Es Vedra Rock, believed to be the most magnetic point on the planet by residents; Tanit, a warrior queen said to be the protector of women on the White Isle; and Hierbas Ibicencas, a herbal mixture known as the “famous spirit of Ibiza”, among others.

On the B side Cuttlefish & Asparagus work out one of the most essential soul joints that always made you wonder why songs couldn’t play forever. Meticulously edited without changing the filth of the unique bassline, Loving You is a wild stomper made to immediately fill or blast any imaginable dance floor.
