In una notte d’inverno profonda e gelida,
l’ombra proiettata sui camini del mondo non era quella di un vecchio vestito di rosso,
ma quella di “Satan Claus,” avvolto in un mantello nero.

Era il mietitore che governava le anime dei morti,
scendendo nel mondo umano solo nella notte di Natale,
per mettere ancora una volta alla prova le “anime degne” in un rituale misterioso.

Quell’anno, scelse due:

• Il mago del pennello che dipingeva la vita delle onde — Katsushika Hokusai
• Il monaco silenzioso che scoprì le leggi della vita — Gregor Johann Mendel


La voce di Satan Claus risuonò fredda ma gentile:

«Insieme affronterete la più difficile prova di coppia della storia.
Il compito: creare il più grande albero di Natale vivente del mondo.
Mendel farà crescere l’albero, e Hokusai lo adornerà.»

I due si scambiarono uno sguardo.
Anche nella morte, il fuoco nei loro occhi non si era spento.

Mendel si inginocchiò silenziosamente sulla terra.
Nel momento in cui le sue dita toccarono il suolo invernale, esso pulsò debolmente.

Al suo comando — il cercatore della legge genetica —
un piccolo germoglio iniziò a crescere con un suono simile a un respiro.

Il suo fusto trafisse il cielo,
i suoi rami si allargarono come a bere la logica della terra,
i suoi aghi verdi tremavano al ritmo del vento.

In pochi minuti, l’albero superò gli edifici.
In decine di minuti, superò le montagne.
Infine—

Si innalzò ben oltre la Torre Eiffel.

Il gigantesco albero muoveva i suoi rami da solo,
oscillando lentamente come una creatura dotata di volontà.

Un lampo di stupore attraversò il volto di Satan Claus.

Hokusai non esitò.

Davanti a lui si stendeva una tela viva e pulsante—
il più grande albero di Natale del mondo.

Portava montagne di materiali sulle spalle,
saltava sui rami sorretti dal vento.

Il suo pennello beveva la luce, squarciava l’aria,
come se dipingesse la natura stessa.

Gli ornamenti che creò erano immensi, intrisi dell’anima del Giappone:

• Spirali dorate che ricordavano corde sacre
• Sfere blu scintillanti come onde di ukiyo‑e in movimento
• Ornamenti d’argento che brillavano nella forma del Monte Fuji
• Disegni di tachibana, fiori di ciliegio, fenici e dei del tuono — memorie del Giappone incarnate


Per contemplare l’insieme, evocò un fantasma di pennellate che volavano nel cielo,
e con motivi del Fuji e della Torre Eiffel,
compose l’albero come un unico, immenso dipinto.

Il colossale albero, adornato da Hokusai,
oscillava come se gioisse,
spargendo luce che colorava il cielo notturno.

Satan Claus lo osservò in silenzio e mormorò:

«…Questa è una creazione che rivaleggia persino con Dio.»

La Notte in cui l’Albero si Risvegliò

Nel momento in cui la forza vitale di Mendel e il potere creativo di Hokusai si intrecciarono,
un torrente di luce sgorgò dall’interno dell’albero.

Il gigante si innalzò verso i cieli,
i suoi rami si allungarono per afferrare le stelle,
la sua luce cadde come neve sul mondo.

La gente lo chiamò miracolo.

Satan Claus si avvicinò ai due in silenzio:

«Il vostro talento e la vostra volontà ardono anche oltre la morte.
Sono soddisfatto.
Ma — il significato di questa fine appartiene all’umanità.»

In effetti, i sentimenti di chi lo vide furono diversi.

Alcuni piansero davanti alla sua grandezza.
Altri tremarono di paura davanti al colossale “albero di un altro mondo” vivente.

Ma alla fine rimase solo una verità:

—La creazione trascende la morte.

Hokusai sorrise. Mendel pregò in silenzio.

L’albero stese le sue radici nel cielo notturno,
brillando come la stella di Natale.
