Drifting away from a state of stability, blurring acceleration, moving out of sight, but not out of mind. Invisible but audible, the consequences reveal themselves through the silence of species we have never heard. Jana Winderen’s new work Pasvikdalen is based on recordings made both above and under water close to the border between Norway and Russia. The work is a commission of Dark Ecology/Sonic Acts. The live premiere of Pasvikdalen took place on 27 February 2015 at the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ, Amsterdam, as part of the Sonic Acts festival 2015. Jana Winderen talked about her work at the Sonic Acts symposium on 27 February, her talk was entitled ‘Listening without getting Answers’.

Electro tower

A excerpt from a longer dusk recording made from around 20:00-21:00 on April 12th, 2016. In this section we can hear a dense mix of frogs, a common snipe, a beaver chewing a tree and several other bird species. The environment was a small swamp that borders a larger forest in southeast Estonia. Unfortunately a car and a plane came in the middle of this section but I think its worth sharing. Recorded with a pair of homemade mics with 'Primo EM172' capsules and a Sony PCM-D50.

Took the Soma Ether out for a night! There seems to be no end to what sounds can be caught with this wonderful EMF receiving 'anti-radio' from Soma Labs / Vlad Kreimer. Just received the Ether from Russia via USPS this morning. Here's raw audio of an hour in downtown Austin.

Only had it for a day but finding it's very variable. In quieter environments, Ether can find produce/receive very calming ambient tones and purr along with some very polite static and reception. You can play it like a theremin, too, attenuating and gesturing on a signal frequency, and loop on something (or a device) til it fades out of reach. But this is a demo of how loud and nicely argumentative it can be as a noise source outside among a lot of activity. It feels like a nice audio photograph of the evening and street.
