[04/11/2025] Beware of the Trials of Doubts and Desires - By Abu Fuḍayl ‘Abdur Raqīb حفظه الله. Khuṭbah at Masjid Salafi, Small Heath, Birmingham, UK.



Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:

- “And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial) which affects not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that Allāh is Severe in punishment.” [Sūrah al-Anfāl 8:25]

- The two main ways in which fitan come. 

- The fitnah of shubuhāt (doubts that afflict the hearts).

- How shaytān deceives those who ascribe to Islām into worshipping other than Allāh. 

- The Prophet’s ﷺ vehement warning against innovation. 

- The hatred of the people of innovation and superstitious beliefs for the people of the Sunnah. 

- Holding on to the Sunnah and not being shy to speak the truth and defend the Sunnah. 

- Characteristics of the Strangers. 

- Two main characteristics the people of Truth should clothe themselves with. 

- The fitnah of shahawāt (desires the souls pursue). 

- Trials of the private parts, stomachs, wealth and leadership. 

- Humility and not desiring to be known.

Some points discussed during this Khuṭbah:

- A lofty characteristic the servant should adorn himself with.
- “Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer verily, to him We will give a good life..” [Sūrah an-Naḥl 16:97]
- Imām aṭ-Ṭabarī (رحمه الله) on how to obtain the “good life” mentioned in the āyah.
- A tremendous du’ā the Messenger ﷺ instructed his Companions (رضى الله عنهم) to say.
- Caution against being discontented with the ḥalāl Allāh has blessed us with.
- “And strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to various groups of them (polytheists and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allāh), the splendour of the life of this world that We may test them thereby. But the provision (good reward in the Hereafter) of your Lord is better and more lasting.” [Sūrah Ṭā Hā 20:131]
- The pathway to sadness and misery.
- A ḥadīth that illustrates the son of Ādam’s insatiable desire for wealth.
- An example of the contentment of the Messenger ﷺ and how he was pleased with the little he had.
- That which caused ‘Umar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (رضى الله عنه) to cry when he entered upon the Messenger ﷺ, and how the Messenger ﷺ consoled him.
- Five golden pieces of advice given to Abū Hurayrah (رضى الله عنه) by the Messenger ﷺ.
- True richness.

- Seeking nearness to Allāh by purifying our hearts, wealth, garments etc.
- Striving to perform the supererogatory acts.
- Remembering Allāh in every situation.
- Loving what Allāh loves and hating what He hates.
- Reflecting upon the Names, Attributes and Actions of Allāh.
- Accompanying those who recite and act upon the Book of Allāh and constantly remember Him.
- “Say (O Muḥammad ﷺ to mankind): ‘If you (really) love Allāh then follow me, Allāh will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allāh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’” [Sūrah Āli ‘Imrān 3:31]
- Imām as-Sa’dī (رحمه الله) on the status of ṣabr with Allāh.
- Secluding oneself with Allāh, particularly in the last third of the night.
- Removing all barriers/obstacles that may come between a person and Allāh.
- Imām as-Sa’dī (رحمه الله) on the verse, “O you who believe! Answer Allāh (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he (ﷺ) calls you to that which will give you life, and know that Allāh comes in between a person and his heart. And verily to Him you shall (all) be gathered.” [Sūrah al-Anfāl 8:24]
- The reality of the heart and how it changes.
- Two supplications we should be plentiful in saying.
- The manner in which we should worship Allāh.
