A brand new quartet formed by bassist Sal La Rocca. With the ardent pleasure of forging strong links between different generations of musicians, Sal has chosen very young talents living in Belgium, and for this occasion he is creating a new repertoire of original compositions, proving by this choice that generational mixing can generate superb results.

This new quartet is a particulary tight encounter between Jeroen, Pascal and Lieven, musicians that i have enjoyed for a long time because of their sincerity as both people and in their music.

This second album by La Rocca deftly avoids that trap. With the exception of "Crescent", all the compositions are signed La Rocca but the rest is impeccably balanced and each musician comes out of the adventure with something to remember.

Insomnia

The project explores a certain duality. First, by the presence of Flemish and Walloon musicians; then, by the apparent opposition between avant-gardism and tradition. Jeroen and Lieven open doors to unexpected sounds and colors. Sal and Pascal are more anchored in the tradition, while remaining permeable to other sounds. This alliance offers open music, with surprising tones, groove background that recall the hard-bop of the 60s. »

Sal La Rocca is originally from Seraing, Belgium, near LIEGE. He was first a Rock guitarist, but switched to the bass as his instrument of choice after hearing (for the first time) music by several jazz greats. After switching, he taught himself how to play by the age of 23. Over time, he become one of the most “in demand” double bassists in Belgium and in the European theater.
Starting in the mid 80’s, Sal has toured and performed with a wide array of musicians on the European continent like : Steve Houben, Jacques Pelzer, Michel Graillier, John Thomas, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Harold Land, Steve Grossman, Sal Nistico, Lee Konitz, Dani Kein featuring Vaya Con Dios (2006-14)…
