Young Oceans has been, from the start, a deeply gratifying and enlightening project.  I’d like to believe that we’ve approached art for art’s sake at our best moments, and I hope to keep pushing in that direction.  So it's been a bonus to hear from listeners around the world who have stumbled upon the music and felt a personal connection with these songs.

The impetus for the first Young Oceans album was to take songs that were written for my church community and arrange them as a meditative soundscape.  As we’ve progressed through ‘Advent’ and now 'I Must Find You’, the aesthetic has admittedly moved even further afield.  Ironically, one of the most consistent requests we have received over the years has been for help in adapting the songs for use in the local church setting.    

Cue several seasons of fits, starts, lengthy philosophical conversations, and artistic self-loathing.  Eventually and thankfully, we connected with a talented new friend named Jonny Macintosh.  Jonny helped us cast a vision forward: a group of outside vocalists capturing an album of songs that could be a resource for Christian communities.   Simple, humble progressions flowing underneath a wave of human voices… other people’s voices.  As Jonny put the album in motion, a humbling list of artists expressed interest in being involved and, all in, close to 30 people lent their musical talents to the project.

It was my middle school music teacher who first taught me that, compared to any other other instrument, the human voice is the most dynamic, versatile and fundamental.  Anyone who’s sung a hymn in church or a pop song in the shower knows that something mystical happens when your voice box resonates and stretches and forms a wild melody.  Something even more profound occurs when we sing as a group, crying out together with songs of faith, longing, praise and lament.

I don’t claim for one second to have cracked the code on how to write songs for the Church to sing.  Writers across the ages that have already provided enough songs to last a lifetime.  This is just our small attempt at joining that great chorus and we hope it blesses you richly.

Continuous Music pioneer and literal force of nature Lubomyr Melnyk releases his new album 'Fallen Trees' on December 7th. Known as ‘the prophet of the piano’ due to his lifelong devotion to his instrument, the new album coincides with Melnyk's 70th birthday. 

Cascades of notes, canyons and rivers of sound: there’s something about Lubomyr Melnyk's music that channels the natural world at its most awe-inspiring. In Fallen Trees the connection with the environment continues, taking its cue from a long rail journey Melnyk made through Europe. Glancing out of the window as the train passed through a dark forest, he was struck by the sight of trees that had recently been felled. “They were glorious,” he says. “Even though they’d been killed, they weren’t dead. There was something sorrowful there, but also hopeful.” That sense of sadness touched by optimism infuses the album, too: rarely has Melnyk made music so shot through with melancholy and regret, but which sounds so rapt, even radiant.

The five-part, 20-minute Fallen Trees is one of the most ambitious and demanding pieces he has ever created. Though the music is – as ever – Melnyk’s own, Fallen Trees once again features a number of Erased Tapes artists. Japanese vocal artist Hatis Noit, whose first EP Illogical Dance came out to much acclaim earlier this year, lends ethereal vocals, floating mysteriously above the surface of Melnyk’s eddying piano lines before diving far beneath. Other contributors include Berlin-based cellist Anne Müller, a sometime collaborator with Nils Frahm, and American singer David Allred, the most recent addition to the label family. “More than any of the albums that I’ve done, it’s a real collaboration,” Melnyk insists, emphasising how much he owes to his producer, Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths.

It is true to say that there is nothing quite like Melnyk’s work: a unique musical pioneer, he has defiantly carved his own path. “I don’t say to people I’m a composer,” he declares. “I don’t know what I am.”

Melnyk composes, as he plays, at the piano, feeling out lines and individual rhythmic cells that bubble, undulate and gradually expand into vast, interlinked frameworks. Asked to describe what it’s like to live inside his music, he says “my whole body is transformed as I play, it honestly feels like that. My fingers feel like the winds of the world; it feels like you’re physically transcending dimensions.”

Despite the autumnal hint in its title, there’s little suggestion of Melnyk slowing down. Having received critical acclaim and co-headlining the prestigious Royal Festival Hall as part of the Erased Tapes 10th anniversary celebrations, after many years his audience is now both global and growing. The composer is finally gaining a momentum in his career that matches the vibrant, highly active energy of his playing.

When It’s Gone is written as an exploration of the human impact on our planet. As we began our Earth project and started to venture into the themes of climate change, one of the things that has deeply resonated with us is our overuse of the planet’s resources. 

As humans continue to exploit and plunder Earth’s natural resources, it battles to support life in our oceans, and we see climate change impact life with record temperatures being reported across the globe.

When It’s Gone attempts to encapsulate an emotional response to seeing all of this destruction, as an onlooker who is watching these events take place, and is almost powerless to stop it.

And while this may be an uncomfortable or challenging concept, we live in hope that there are solutions to this existential crisis, that we can come together to individually and collectively change the course that we are currently on.
