Indian Summer (One Minute song #18)

Some time ago, I got it into my head that I should be able to improvise contrapuntally—like J.S. Bach, but in a modern musical language.

I’m still working on it and am undoubtedly better at it than in 2010. Still, there is something about one’s musical past that I am reminded of when I listen to these improvisations 14 years after the fact:  It’s not simply that you grow as a person and artist, but that you become a different person and artist, though still based on the original!

So when I listen to these, I’m hearing something that I wouldn’t do today and couldn’t. I’m not that artist/person anymore!

But I appreciate what that iteration of Peter Saltzman was striving for.

These are all very reflective, if not abstract. So, for those of you who have been listening to my more “accessible” music, perhaps you’ll find these improvisations more challenging. They are still highly melodic and lyrical, a hallmark of my style. But damn, they sure are moody! (But, hey, they are short!)
