Idea Unsound is a left-field 2step producer & DJ that mixes broken beats, futuristic vocal chops with a melodic, dubstep palette. His musical style is strongly influenced by his classical training, his love for science and technology, and his roots in dance music. His sound has been described by others as ‘jazz-inspired electronic music with a futuristic twist’.
He has played alongside Suzanne Ciani, Sweaterbeats, XXYYXX, and Pat Lok among others. Pre-COVID,  he performed regularly around the San Francisco Bay Area and has even toured internationally. He has multiple releases available on various labels and can be streamed via every digital platform. 
	His first foray into bass, the EP ‘Folly’, which was released on bass-heavyweight label Mallabel Music, exploded onto the scene in 2014 and established him as a master of experimental bass. His hit single “Waiting” gained a lot of traction on Soundcloud and helped create attention for his next series of catchy electronic hits. Shortly thereafter, he released “Explore Shanghai”, a concept album that expressed the hustle and bustle of Shanghai’s non-stop transportation services. 
Part of Idea Unsound’s success stems from his uncanny technical prowess and knowledge of modern production tools. He approaches musical concepts from the mindset of an artist and an engineer, being able to both conceptualize great sounds and then shape them sonically into the mix.

An accomplished and versatile musician from Kent, Ohio, Sam began his musical life on the piano at age 6.  As he grew up he explored several string and brass instruments, and voice. He dabbled in many forms and genres of music: playing bass with the Kent State Symphony, performing musical theater, writing and performing in numerous popular music bands, singing with the Cleveland Opera Chorus and Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, founding and directing a youth contemporary music choir at a local church in Kent, and performing on stages and in orchestra pits throughout Ohio and the Northeast US.

Sam moved to New York in 2008, where he performed at venues, including The Juilliard School, St Bartholomew’s Church, Avery Fisher Hall, The Stonewall Inn and Carnegie Hall. He has played bass for the internationally renowned cabaret artist, Micheline Van Houtem; composed and performed with the new music chorus, Chromatic Voice Exchange; played bass with The Chelsea Symphony and the Queer Urban Orchestra; and sang regularly with St. Bartholomew's Choir. In 2014, Sam made his television debut as a member of the fictitious "New York Symphony" in Amazon Studios' original series, "Mozart in the Jungle". Sam studied music composition with Lowell Liebermann at Mannes (The New School) from 2015-2017.

Sam moved to San Francisco in 2017 and currently studies composition with David Garner at SFCM. He also teaches privately, free-lances as a bassist and vocalist, and continues to write, arrange and record. He lives in the Castro, San Francisco.

A little about me—my life began with an auspicious birth on one of the coldest nights ever recorded in Wausau, Wisconsin ❄️🌙. I've been producing music, engineering tracks, and perfecting vocals for clients for over six years 🎶. Along the way, I’ve had the honor of working with Cincinnati Ballet, Washington Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, the Walt Disney Family Museum, SONY, and JAKE Atelier Fashion, among others.  

💿 In 2020, I founded Zenith Flare Records in San Francisco after realizing that artists working with labels often have to give up partial or total ownership of their music. Not anymore, folks! 🚀 Since then, I’ve produced and engineered music for some amazing artists!—like Miraaj, Valli Mob, Nikuli, Helena of Troy, and myself under the artist names Apadravya and KXMRXN. In 2024, I transplanted ZFR to Wausau, WI 🌲🏡.  

🎭 My career took off when I won a competition during my undergrad at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music to produce music for an apprentice choreographer at the San Francisco Ballet School. Overseeing the choreography workshop was none other than the critically acclaimed choreographer & former SFB soloist, Dana Genshaft. This moment led to a lasting collaboration, resulting in works for San Francisco Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, and Washington Ballet. 🎶  

🌀 In 2019, I was awarded the prestigious Sky High Grant, which took me to Burning Man, where I performed a live electronic healing sound bath 🌌🎛️ at Comfort & Joy’s Blacklight Temple. You can check out my video portfolio of these projects at the bottom of this bio 🎥👇.
