The belt of Venus, Venus belt, also Venus band or counter-dawn arc, is the name given in atmospheric optics to a phenomenon occurring during civil twilight. It is a pink to orange appearance shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, which runs in a band shape at an altitude of 10° to 20° parallel to the opposite horizon.

In favorable conditions, the counter-dawn arc may run semicircularly over a horizontal angular range of 180 degrees and is separated from the horizon by a dark blue-gray arc, the earth shadow arc. Looking towards the location of the sun's antipode and with a human field of view, a band-like reddish coloration of the sky can thus be perceived all around. The intensity of this predominantly orange-reddish colored Venus belt mostly reaches a maximum near the sun's counterpoint during the upper counter-dawn.

The reference to the name of the planet Venus is derived from the visibility of this lower planet. The brightest celestial object after the moon appears in the sky during twilight, as an evening star or as a morning star, but not above the opposite horizon, where the Venusian belt appears.

The name of the apparition alludes to an attribute of the ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite or her Roman equivalent Venus, namely her enchantingly lovely girdle, probably a band girdled in the chest area (called cestus in Latin, ancient Greek also στρόφιον stróphion).

Als Venusgürtel, auch Venusband oder Gegendämmerungsbogen, wird in der atmosphärischen Optik ein während der bürgerlichen Dämmerung auftretendes Phänomen bezeichnet. Es handelt sich um eine rosa- bis orangefarbene Erscheinung kurz vor Sonnenaufgang oder kurz nach Sonnenuntergang, die bandförmig in einer Höhe von 10° bis 20° parallel zum gegenüberliegenden Horizont verläuft.

Der Gegendämmerungsbogen kann im günstigen Fall halbkreisförmig über einen horizontalen Winkelbereich von 180 Grad laufen und wird vom Horizont durch einen dunklen blaugrauen Bogen, den Erdschattenbogen, getrennt. Mit Blick zum Ort des Sonnengegenpunktes und bei menschlichem Gesichtsfeld kann so ringsum eine bandförmige rötliche Färbung des Himmels wahrgenommen werden. Die Intensität dieses überwiegend orange-rötlich gefärbten Venusgürtels erreicht zumeist nahe dem Sonnengegenpunkt während der oberen Gegendämmerung ein Maximum.

Der Bezug zum Namen des Planeten Venus leitet sich von der Sichtbarkeit dieses unteren Planeten ab. Das nach dem Mond hellste Gestirn taucht während der Dämmerung am Himmel auf, als Abendstern oder als Morgenstern, allerdings nicht über dem Gegenhorizont, wo das Venusband erscheint.

Der Name der Erscheinung spielt auf ein Attribut der antiken griechischen Göttin Aphrodite beziehungsweise ihrer römischen Entsprechung Venus an, nämlich deren bezaubernd liebreizenden Gürtel, wohl ein im Brustbereich gegürtetes Band (lateinisch cestus genannt, altgriechisch auch στρόφιον stróphion).

In Japan, there is a tradition known as 'Juugoya'(means the 15th night) which is part of celebrating the changing seasons, especially the beauty of autumn and expressing gratitude for nature. This year, this special day falls on Friday, September 29th, in two days. Friends and family gather together to appreciate the beautiful full moon while enjoying treats like dango (rice dumplings) and autumn vegetables. This is known as 'Otsukimi' or moon-viewing. The mid-autumn moon has also been a significant theme in Japanese literature and poetry, inspiring many poets and writers to create poems and stories. This song similarly revolves around the theme of the beautiful full moon."

I am a great admirer of Jonathan's work and when he approached me with this wonderful piece of music asking if I might have a go at lyrics and a vocal I felt really privileged. I wanted to try to do as good a job as I could, but initially I struggled, and then, feeling extremely despondent I took a break from it. On my second attempt I think I started to listen properly to what the music was saying – rather than imposing too much of myself on it – and I  began to get melodies and word patterns that seemed like they were there under the surface already.

This has been an amazing project to work on, and Jonathan has been hugely supportive throughout. I've done my bit for sure, but it would have been nothing without the music.
