Wash 
‘Free Until They Cut Me Down’  by Iron & Wine was a main musical influence for Wash.  The lyrics are about the freedom and release involved in death.  They are submissive and acceptant yet strong and liberating.  Wash uses the phrase ‘take me’ from Iron & Wine as a tool to illustrate these meanings and feelings.  Phrases such as ‘so be it’, ‘let it’ and ‘take a bow’ are also used for this effect.   In Zen and the Art of Consciousness  Blackmore’s struggle to explain the contrast between what she knows to be true and what her perceptions tell her highlight both the benefits of deep thought and the limitations of language.  Like ‘Free Until They Cut Me Down’, Blackmore demonstrates submission and frustration as well as acceptance and liberation.  Wash aims to capture this contrast in musical tone and lyrical content.


Wash

Tool song, Parabola performed on acoustic guitar with bass and vocals.  Recorded in a greenhouse in 2011.  From the album 'In a Green House' available at bandcamp.  All the money goes to the Kindu Trust.

Studio based ambient, experimental folktronica band Fabrikotion released their first EP at the end of November. The 5 track, short album is a cinematic epic; expect sleazy dramatics and material electronics. The route is progressive and constant and takes the listener through many sonic environments whilst remaining within a style of folk poetry experimentalism. This is track 4 from the EP.

This was the last track played at Vintage and Classic Reggae Night in Huddersfield on the 9th/10th May.  Words by Sangie Davis.   

The evening is a meditation in itself, put on by a dedicated DJ through the gorgeous Valvatron Sound System.  Every month it heals my wounds and moves me forward.  I owe a great deal to the night and the nobel Dr Huxtable.

This recording is a glimmer of my respect for well chosen, finely crafted reggae played through a proper system.     

(also - i have used an image of the Valvatron but that does not indicate any endorsement - I just think it's hypnotically good looking.)

Melancholia

Both Muhammad Ali and Prince Buster died in 2016.  Separately they both had a huge influence on popular culture - equally remarkable showmen and incredibly skilled artists, in different forms.  'Ali Shuffle' was Prince Buster's 1967 tribute to the great Muslim activist and his unique boxing style.  In this cover I have mimicked the rhythm and some of the instrumentation but added soundbite samples from Muhammad Ali.  Thank you to Paul Huxtable for introducing me to 'Ali Shuffle', a hypnotising piece of music.
