La composition de cette pièce repose sur l’analyse d’enregistrements de terrains réalisés en Normandie et en Val de Loire, dans lesquels j’ai pu isoler diverses manifestations de faune pour m’intéresser uniquement à leur aspect temporel.

Les phénomènes de réitérations, de micro-variations et d'isochronies constituaient des formes d’invariants entre diverses espèces, sur divers territoires et en divers moments de la journée ou de l'année.

Refusant l'imitation, et retenant exclusivement les caractéristiques temporelles des espèces enregistrées, j’ai cherché à juxtaposer des matériaux comme des espèces imaginaires, jusqu’à parvenir à des états d’ambiguïté avec d’autres références que sont la synthèse granulaire ou la musique électronique progressive.

La lente évolution des paysages m’a conduit vers une conception plus minimale du développement et du continuum, et l'idée de déambulation a orienté la pièce vers de lentes émergences et bascules entre les plans sonores, certains matériaux lointains se rapprochant peu à peu pour s'éloigner tout aussi lentement.
Un autre parcours réside dans le geste même de l’écriture, qui cherche à rassembler, à synchroniser ces autonomies dans les relations instrumentales pour constituer une proposition structurelle.

Xing presents the LP Seize the Means of Complexity by Mattin, ninth release of XONG collection - artist records. The release is on white vinyl in a limited numbered edition of 150 copies. The collector's edition consists of 20 copies, each accompanied by a different polaroid portraying fragments from the social media universe.

Seize the Means of Complexity is a call for all social media users of the world to unite: "We are in the asshole of history. Broken individuals struggling with mental health, media obsession, need for attention and legitimation. Burning souls searching for validation, suffering from imposter syndrome in a post-Netflix wasteland. From the ruins of our subjectivity, something can be built; something must be built. To seize the means of complexity, we must comprehend the tools of algorithmic subsumption, and leverage that knowledge to steer their development towards an open-source conception of subjectivity. We should all have access to the codes, technologies, models, and complexities that shape our lives. By embracing noise rather than shying away from it, this adaptive open-source subject could pave the way for a future transcending capitalist realism and its end of history, forging a new form of communism fit for the 21st century."
Seize the Means of Complexity is the recomposition of some materials Mattin used in his interactive performances over the last year: a mass of musical fragments that crystallise as a call for mobilisation. As the title of the album advises, or rather states: to not be crushed by the symptoms that social media produces on us, we must seize the opportunity opened up by the internet in its widest complexity. How can we collectivize the psychosomatic consequences produced by the Meganets? How can we reverse-engineer social media? This new record by Mattin commissioned for Xong collection contains recordings from TikTok and Instagram (hits, pop songs, advertising and voice) that can be heard as a a chorus of fragments from the multitude addressing psychic destabilization and the horizon of paranoia and alienation. This plunderphonia of sounds transmitted by the global media opens the possibility of addressing what it means to be human beyond the liberal individual. Seize the Means of Complexity is a proposition, a sonic stage for something to happen.

Xong is the name of the collection produced by Xing, a vinyl-only record label of works by both Italian and international personalities linked to the variegated worlds of live performativity. The collection explores a geography of artists who present this sonic field as a platform to expand their staged worlds. "The space of the record" is given focus and amplifies their poetics as both a sonic and physical phenomenon. Xong is a unique project that draws out divergent understandings of the performative and live arts, beyond genre and intersecting between different practices. Xong collects a series of original creations that constitute an expanded program. Each physical record is a numbered edition on white vinyl hosting the solidification of the gesture. A wave upon wave, a series of "Music-Non-Music" to actualize both the artists' and listeners' imagination.

Thousand of sand fleas (talitrus saltator) were eating a large jellyfish on the beach at Oleron island (France). We put 2 hydrophones inside to listen. We can hear the fleas jumping around but also the waves from the inside perspective of the jellyfish.

Recorded with 2 Aquarian H2a on a Mixpre 6-II with Grégoire Chauvot at Oleron island in 2022.

Leading up to his first ‘fictional’ album «Garden of Ediacara», which will be released on May 3rd via -OUS,  landscape sound artist Ludwig Berger presents the EP «Species Loneliness».

Building on an extensive and acclaimed body of work in sound art, field recordings, installation and performance, as well as music for film and theatre, the EP «Species Loneliness» and the subsequent  album «Garden of Ediacara» mark a shift in Berger’s creative work. But as he enters the realm of ‘fictional’ music by engaging with environmental emotions, he still relies on his far-reaching practice as a close listener and archivist of unheard sounds.

With «Species Loneliness», Berger explores a yearning for interspecies connection on a damaged planet. The six track EP presents a set of muted songs that are haunted by echoes of eco-horror and eco-gothic films of the past century, while interwoven raw field recordings create the space to breathe. The tracks center around the term of «Species Loneliness» — an ecological form of isolation and solitude. It expresses the feeling of homesickness while being at home, arising from the loss of natural habitats and the decline of biodiversity. Through layers of degraded samples, eco-nostalgia runs through the EP, longing for meaningful relationships obscured in the shadows of the Anthropocene.

Ludwig Berger is a landscape sound artist, educator and musician. In his compositions, installations and performances, he enables intimate and playful sonic encounters with plants, animals, buildings and geological entities. In his musical work, Berger produces sonic eco-fictions with processed and synthetic sounds.  He has composed sound and music for award-winning films and theatre pieces and curated the landscape sound festival ‘Sonic Topologies’ in Zurich. He is also founder and curator of the label Vertical Music, which releases field recordings and experimental music. 

Berger holds degrees in electroacoustic composition, as well as musicology, art history and literature. As a sound researcher and teacher at the Institute for Landscape Architecture at ETH Zurich from 2015-2022, he studied the sonic dimension of Japanese gardens, alpine glaciers and urban landscapes, which among other things led to the release of the acclaimed album trilogy ‘Melting Landscapes’, ‘Dammed Landscapes’ and ‘Buried Landscapes’.
