From Europe’s southern tip in the Gibraltar-facing port city of Algeciras comes ORBE, the Spanish techno enthusiast whose potent beats have hammered out a pedigree path both as DJ and producer. Prevailing winds carried Fernando Sanz first to Seville to study sound engineering, later to Madrid where the fertile scene allowed him to build a community of music-minded friends that have put that city squarely on the map. Under these conditions, his work (what he terms a means of ‘contacting the future, the avant-garde’) has developed into something much deeper and more sophisticated. His love of artists like Brian Eno and Boards of Canada, and roots in breakbeat and drum and bass have informed a style that’s allowed him to take up the mantle as one of Spain’s most interesting talents. Under his self-titled record label (est. 2014) come his signature killer tunes, and in his work with names like Eduardo de la Calle and labels like Token, Hivern Discs, Axis and Mote Evolver a pole position at the forefront of modern techno. Fresh off his set on the Bassiani floor (14th March) comes this next Bassiani mix. Tensile rhythms that lurch ahead with supernatural power, an involute web of intelligent sounds that attest to his skill as selector. Bassiani Podcast 254 is an hour-long mash up of elfin beats, a vibrating hymn to the sounds of tomorrow, Orbe at the top of his game.

A bit of interesting background for this track: all of the synthesisers are made with tones generated from my mass spectrometry data.
While analysing the vast swaths of data for my PhD in biology, I developed a method to turn raw spectral data into soundscapes. This song uses data from some of my favourite proteins including ATP synthase and histones.
This is my first experimental techno track, so feedback is welcome!

Description:
Someone asks on the Microtonal Music and Tuning Theory Facebook group about systematic shrinking and growing of intervals within their equave, (Rachmiel Szgut, Ref. [1]), I remember back trying this once before. Someone else (Marnen Liabow-Koser) responds with:

"When I was in college, I worked out an unequal scale based on an idea from a classmate. It was based on the sines of equal angles, so the pitches kind of bunched together at the end of each octave and were farther apart in the middle. We never figured out how to make decent music with it, unfortunately."

To me this was a musical challenge, could I construct a microtonal scale to stretch a 12EDO scale, retaining the 1/1 and 2/1 frequency ratios of the first and last notes, using a sine function and make it musically pleasing.

Challenge accepted!

The concept is to apply a transfer function to the 12EDO scale, if the function has a gradient of unity, then it is a direct mapping. If this transfer function has the units of semi-tones (100 cent), then the start and end coordinates of the function are 0,0 and 12,12. If you take a portion of the sine function from 3pi/2 radians to 5pi/2, it conveniently takes your from -1 to +1, apply some scaling to bring this into 0 to 12 [semitone] range and you have the beginnings of a transfer function to morph the 12EDO scale.

I did not want to end it there, I wanted to have the amount of 12EDO distortion to change for each octave, using an exponent was perfect for this.

I have a micro-tuning Max for Live (M4L) midi device to perform such tuning, fired up Ableton Live and wacked in the numbers previously created in a spreadsheet. I performed this on an Ableton Push2 midi controller but since it has 12 notes per frame, any standard piano style keyboard will equally suffice. Or if you have some other favourite EDO, let's say 7EDO, let D=7 and experiment with different values of K to see what you like.

In Live using a wave table synthesiser, I could easily experiment with harmony and purposely spread the chords over several octaves, where each octave is slightly differently tuned. Some times I took a basic chord within one octave then played it again in other octaves to demonstrate the different feel as one progresses through different octaves. Two tracks were used with this strict "SINEDO" tuning, this established the harmony. This was followed the melodic parts performed on hardware synthesisers which do not have discrete tuning, the Soma Pipe (your human voice provides the tuning) and the Soma Lyra 8 (only has stepless tuning knobs). The melodic part's tuning choices were done by ear and spontaneously during the performance, using the already recorded wave table synthesiser back tracks as the guide for tuning.

Our effort to decode all the sounds in the robot's head is going on. Trying to understand the history of this planet, we're instead, undertanding his life.
We went through a lot of different memories.
 During his journey, he met g-Wow, a female robot; if we can define it like that.
