The Sands Of Time

A cover of Ewan McColl's 'Dirty Old Town', which was made most famous by The Pogues. We were asked to record this for MaD Theatre Company's new play 'Conceived in a Curry House', inspired by the formation and development of FC United of Manchester. This version will feature in the play, it was produced AMD engineered by Franco Bandini, who did an almighty job on something that stands as one of the best things we have ever done.

Well his name is John, He can't go on
He struggles with women just like any other guy
He deals in sin, he can never win
It's been this way for much of his short life

Women love him, but he won't let them in
And all the strangers that he faces they appear to be hostile…but only to him
They think he's insane, they have no time for his pain
So he plasters a smile across his face to lead them on

When he goes to a bar, all eyes are afar
So he orders 7 whiskeys, tries to try drink the whole place dry
The valve said release, and the demons have ceased
He found relief and now he can get some peace

He's 6 drinks gone….no idea where he's from

He fell to the ground, wailed a hell of a sound
And in the morning he'll wonder why he cant do no good

Living in Manchester in 2016, Sam Smith struggles to rise above his destitute, proletarian circumstances through an intense and passionate pursuit of self-education, hoping to achieve a place among the musical elite. His principle motivation is his love of music. Because Smith is a rough, uneducated musician from a working-class background and the music industry belongs to the bourgeoise, a union between them would be impossible unless he reaches their level of wealth and refinement. This will not happen.

The Parish Church Fire represents this musicians frustration with the above and the non-record-buying public.
