Samstone is an artist and producer whose potential knows no bounds. Versatility is at his core; from heavy DnB to mainstream interludes, his live DJ sets and self-produced music have topped charts and wowed crowds from his hometown of Shepshed all the way to the Czech Republic. Now, he’s preparing for one of his biggest moments yet: fusing iconic outfit The Cardigans with co-featured DJ and producer AKTIVE for an incendiary DnB version of ‘My Favourite Game’.
The original may have been released before Samstone was even born, but music has been integral to his life from day one. Coming from musical parents – his dad a bass player and mum a singer in local choirs – music has always been around for Samstone. Smashing his way through toy drum kits aged three, it wasn’t long before his parents saw that glint in their son’s eye that told them where his destiny lay. Soon, he transitioned from smashing drums to smashing DJ decks (only this time, not literally).
His spark for electronic music ignited after hearing Skrillex’s seminal dubstep numbers ‘Bangarang’ and ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’. His first forays into DJ’ing came aged 12 after being gifted a pair of Numark decks for Christmas, setting the foundations for his future path and future musical discoveries like deep house, DnB and fellow contemporaries Hedex and K Motionz. It was then that a passion for producing followed. FL Studio armed Samstone with the toolkit to create music of his own. The DJ decks gave him his medium for performance. Both combined with his love for music… this was where Samstone the artist was born.
Uploading some of his first mixes to SoundCloud while still at school and building initial relationships within the DnB community, Samstone says that only his friends listened to his music back then. Now, things have changed. ‘Thumpy’, a track that pushed Samstone’s sonic boundaries with its relentless DnB energy, achieved notable success by topping the DnB & New and Hot charts on SoundCloud. Bootleg remixes of Nathan Dawe and Bru-C’s ‘Oh Baby’ and OneRepublic’s ‘I Ain’t Worried’ from the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack further positioned Samstone among more mainstream audiences. But having reached out to The Cardigans after a stroke of genius to propel their song into a new dimension in 2024, Samstone now has one of the year’s most exciting DnB bangers at his fingertips.
‘My Favourite Game’ sprawls with booming bass and drums, atmospheric vocals and euphoric DnB energy. Collaborating with producer AKTIVE and featuring The Cardigans themselves, it’s another fusion of mainstream pop and heavy DnB that’s fast becoming a trademark to Samstone’s sound. The original’s memorable guitar line forms the main hook, but with an added twist of it being re-recorded using synths to give it an edgier feel. The calm intro gives way to the high-octane drop, and other new elements combine with the original stems from the song to give the track a completely new identity. It’s fresh, brilliantly frenetic and a true indicator of the depth of Samstone’s artistry.
It won’t be long before he’s set to unveil other new music that’s looming on the horizon to live crowds at his DJ sets, which he’s been no stranger to so far. For Samstone, nothing matches the energy of a live crowd; capturing the moment with the audience in his palm is everything. He’s played multiple shows across the UK and Europe, cementing his reputation as one of the country’s hottest new DJs and producers going into 2024. His peers have also showcased his music at their live sets, including Hedex during his DnB Allstars 360 set.
Ultimately, with Samstone continuing to refine his techniques, showcase his musical versatility and relish the experience of playing to live crowds, he is already achieving his most humble yet honest goal as an artist: to play his music out into the world for others to hear. He concludes: “I make music because I love it, but I live to see that crowd reaction.”
