Its aim is to convey musical values, rather than supporting a music industry facilitated by rapid technological advancements, without excluding or combating technology itself. It does not deliberately represent a form of social-artistic activism in opposition to the music industry.
The creative process is determined by authentic and ethical cultural expression, rather than a recipe that seeks to fuel ephemeral stylistic affinities lacking artistic foundation, solely facilitated by the rapid evolution of technology and production devices.
It is an eclectic and diverse electronic production that can incorporate elements from multiple musical subgenres without strictly fitting into any of them.
It exhibits an expression that takes into account the rigors imposed by the history of art and music. It is documentary in nature, including dramatic and cinematic influences, and is generally artistically provocative.

Work

Lena Willikens doesn’t play the hits. When she’s behind the decks, even her biggest fans often have no idea exactly what she’s playing, and that’s part of the magic. Like all DJs, Willikens of course has a passion for records, but she’s also after something bigger, something that’s truly transportive for those on the dancefloor.

Born and raised in Germany, Willikens first honed her unique approach during a long residency at Düsseldorf’s beloved Salon des Amateurs. These days, however, she’s based in Amsterdam, where her transportative impulses have been plugged into a variety of outlets with a global reach. On the radio, she pilots the monthly Lightning Conductor program on NTS. On record, she recently curated the fifth installment of Dekmantel’s acclaimed Selectors compilation series, and she’s also been tapped to remix the likes of Lena Platonos, S U R V I V E, rRoxymore, Simian Mobile Disco and Ana Helder, amongst others. On stage, Willikens works with artist Sarah Szczesny on Phantom Kino Ballett, an immersive audio-visual performance art project that defies routine explanation.

Still, it’s in the DJ booth where Willikens continues to make the biggest impact. Whether she’s playing alone or in tandem with fellow sonic explorer and Salon des Amateurs alum Vladimir Ivkovic, Willikens nimbly navigates electronic music’s darkest and most bizarre corners, sampling different temperatures, different moods and a dollop of chaos, just to keep things interesting. And although she herself doesn’t always know the final destination, when Willikens is at the helm, there’s no question that the journey is bound to be thrilling.

For this week’s episode of the FMB mixtape series, we welcome Julienne Dessagne aka Fantastic Twins; the Berlin-based French artist, producer, live performer and label owner (Microdosing). As usual we fired some questions over to find out a bit about the mix & what she’s been up to recently:

Mainly traveling for my live shows and in between working in the studio on lots of exciting projects – a soundtrack for contemporary dance, adding the last touches to my album, finishing an EP, and a new collaboration with Andrei Rusu (1/2 of the Khidja duo)… amongst other things. 

The mix was recorded in my studio in Berlin. My focus has always been on producing music and performing live shows rather than DJing so I have learnt to find my own way of making mixes which isn’t exactly the standard DJ approach. I use mainly Ableton and some outboard effect units. After selecting the music and digitalising vinyls when needed, I put the tracks in a session and do quite a lot of editing, add some layers of my own recorded material or vocals here and there, process some bits through external effects, etc. My mix is ultimately an instinctive assembling of all that and some happy accidents. The idea behind the mix is hopefully to create emotion for the listeners. I personally don’t enjoy mixes that sound like a straight motorway from start to finish. I much prefer to be taken through highs, lows and unexpected turns. I approach mixes in a very similar way to my live sets. For this particular mix, I liked the idea of starting things on what sounds like the fading end of something else. And building anew from there, in full circle.

Some upcoming live shows this weekend in Paris, Prague, a Mexican tour in December, an endless list of projects to finish in the studio, and I’m also looking forward to diving into the visual / art direction research for my new album which will hopefully be released next year.

They have played at clubs and festivals across Europe and beyond, including Panorama Bar in Berlin, Nuits Sonores in Lyon, and Dekmantel in Amsterdam.

Overall, Khidja is a duo of talented and innovative electronic music producers who have made a significant impact on the contemporary dance music scene. Their music is highly regarded by critics and fans alike, and they continue to push the boundaries of electronic music with their unique sound and vision.
