Have you ever invented something, then loved it so much you thought it would change your life forever, then gotten sick of it and never wanted to see it again? Yeah, small demographic, didn’t really expect to see many hands going up on that one… Well, like all musicians, The Bearded Man is inherently lazy. Known for his predilections towards booze, gambling, and the baser facets of modern day life, some of The Bearded Man’s greatest achievements were created in a stupor, searching for a way to be even lazier. The year was 1762, and our hero and John Montagu were heads up in a 24 hour long gambling streak. Neither party wanted to back down, but both were getting increasingly hungry and hungover. As The Bearded Man pushed all in, he summoned the chef, and whispered something into his ear. Right at the moment of his defeat, Montagu was handed a platter with meat placed inside two pieces of toast. This new food invention seemed to cheer the man up so much, that The Bearded Man let Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, take credit for its invention. He and Emdeka (the chef) knew the truth, but they split the gigantic pot and went on their merry way.

As they say, a little bit of kindness goes a long way… A young Bearded Man felt despondent and hopeless, after having been sold into a life of servitude together with his older sister Satsu by their parents. After being treated worse than dirt for most of his early childhood, his prospects seemed dim, even by Japanese pre World War II standards. As he stood on the small wooden bridge, looking out onto the river and a sea of people that seemed to be completely detached from his own reality, a kind gentlemen stopped by and tried to cheer him up. The older stranger bought The Bearded Man a cherry snow cone — a delicious treat that he couldn’t have ever afforded on his own. In a flash, the man disappeared, leaving behind a few coins to help The struggling Bearded Man on his way. Even though the coins would have provided enough fish and rice for a month, The Bearded Man instantly gave them away at a local temple, daring to let hope enter his heart for the first time in his young life. It was then and there that The Bearded Man decided he wanted to become a geisha once and for all. Oh wait… You know what? Crap. That’s actually the story of the 2005 cinematic masterpiece “Memoirs of a Geisha”. Funny, we really thought we were onto something there. Well, if we’re going to make The Bearded Man’s bizarre backstory coherent, you and I are gonna do this together.

Whether it’s producing, remixing or dj’ing, Sander Kleinenberg has been building credibility on all fronts for over twenty-five years. He has established himself as an advocate of progress and most of all, a pivotal player on the frontier of electronic music. Starting out dj-ing at merely fifteen years old, a young Sander Kleinenberg was inspired by club music and hip-hop culture in the late eighties. This cultural shift inspired his own musical path, which in turn led to him traveling the world and spreading his sound along the way. Many awards, accolades and having performed all corners of the world later you could say it was destiny. 

Often mentioned when talking about the first wave of superstar dj’s from the progressive house wave around the turn of the century, Sander brought a mixture genres and styles to the table like never heard before. Quirky disco, psychedelia, Detroit techno, straight up soul and industrialism contributed greatly to the ever-evolving musical landscape in the ‘90s and 00’s. Sander’s eclectic persona and capability to always be two steps ahead of the rest have resulted in him being an award-winning dj and producer. As time passes by and his career unfolds, the pattern within it becomes more and more visible, Sander is a man on the move, always searching for the “perfect mix” in his own words. Sander’s relentless passion for perfection has kept him away from classification, putting hours upon hours into the enrichment of dj- and producer identity. Constantly twisting and shaping sounds. It’s this search for relevance in electronic musics development that keeps him re-inventing himself in every decade that has gone by since those early days. 

Today Sander looks back at his journey and thought it was time to make up the balance of all the corners of progress his career has taken him. You could call it a full circle type moment settling for nothing else but quality. If you are looking for someone who has searched high and low and has taken that into his current musical identity then Sander is your man. Like a fine wine matured into something wonderful.. Weaving generations, styles and a healthy eye on the future together in a relevant cocktail of musical maturity.
