The world can be an enchanted and formidable place when you’re a kid. Although poets, composers and novelists have tried to capture the weirdness of childhood for centuries, it’s territory that few dance music producers ever explore. But that’s a trend that Sanoi is comprehensively bucking on his latest single, ‘Castle on the Hill’.

Sanoi (also known as Jonas Fisher) is a Berlin producer who currently calls New Zealand home. During his last two years in Aotearoa, the young producer has spent his time cooking up festival ammunition for labels like Traum, Bar 25 and Beat & Path. While his previous discography has followed a theme of desert enlightenment (calling to mind artists like Acid Pauli and Bedouin), Sanoi’s latest release for Beat & Path takes a more introspective route.

‘Castle On The Hill’ (the first single from Sanoi’s upcoming self-titled album) is underpinned by long Moog-style bass tones. At the same time, shimmering highs and halting, broken piano chords call to mind a young Jonas Fisher’s daydreams, evoking wispy, palatial images. Both these elements combine to create the unusual and powerful sensation of dancing your way through the artist’s autobiography, an effect that he’ll go on to explore at length in the upcoming album.

On the B-side, Switzerland’s Kellerkind has chosen to accentuate every hint of grandeur in Jonas’ original piece, heating up the kick drum, increasing the bassline’s mischief factor by 40%, and carving out plenty of space to let the main elements ring out. There’s also a new sense of urgency in the track’s shuffling shakers and low-end motion. All of this makes for a decidedly dance-oriented track, with a chunkiness that will appeal to fans of Systematic Records.

‘A Moment in Time'  the innocence of Sanoi’s younger self has all but evaporated, and we’re in a new territory of breakbeats, sinister acid lines and weighty chord progressions. The track might call to mind your first experience standing alone in a big club full of sweating strangers and earth-quaking beats. As thrilling as it is, coming of age can be a daunting experience.

This isn’t Sanoi’s first venture on Beat & Path. In 2019, the Berliner released a low, chugging EP through this label, a glowing debut entitled ‘Drive’. Then late last year, he followed up with a Jodorowsky-channelling festival anthem, ‘Walk’ (in collaboration with Jake Rattler). But where these releases were playa weapons, Sanoi’s newest enterprise is an autobiographical concept album, taking us into a more vulnerable part of the artist’s mind. And unlike many concept albums, this one is consistently danceable.

Right from the start, there’s a fine balance of soul searching and bottom-end sway. ‘When I Was A Little Boy’ (track one) opens with the sounds of children playing, while organic percussion quietly swings its way into the frame and leads us into a subtle, nostalgic deep house number. The low frequencies are growling but restrained, while the high end is celestial, bringing Sanoi’s fellow Berlin-resident Powel to mind. In psychedelic states, life-scenes will sometimes project themselves onto a backdrop of patterned visual motifs. In a similar way, Sanoi projects childhood scenes onto the constant four-four of the beat here, and the result is hallucinogenic and personal.

Beat & Path have spent two years nurturing talent, throwing their weight behind albums from @sanoimusik and The Oddness and tracking Uone and Western's treks into gold-rush territory. But it's been 28 months since their last VA release, and Camp Out 001 provides the variety that was set up in 2020's Winter Sampler.

There's an eclectic range of tempos and romp factor here; this compilation being as much about dancing under trees as lying in a fireside cuddle puddle while someone plays amateur astronomer. Alongside the big Beat & Path names, there's also a healthy recognition of bubbling talent.

The ascent on this journey is a gentle one – Sanoi (Jonas Fischer) and Zuke (Ed Zuccollo) lay out a shimmering low-tempo rework of ‘Through the Trees', with an Acid Pauli swagger on the lows. Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant sets a sylvan tone for the release (‘through the trees I see, I breathe…'), something that Sanoi and Zuke expertly accentuate with high granular shimmers, conjuring stars between pine needles.

The Duat is the realm of eternal consciousness in Ancient Khemit, where the Ba (consciousness) of a person would go to continue their existence. It is the place where those people, who have developed a higher state of consciousness, go after they leave earth in the transition we call death.
The Duat is another name of the Sirius star, the brightest star in the night sky. It is where the Light (RA) inhabits and illuminates everything. The Duat is represented as a five-point star inside of a circle. It is also said that it represents the “so above, as below” concept. That is why the Duat had many geographical features that simulated the landscape of Ancient Khemit. There were islands, rivers, caves, mountains, fields, and more. Apart from these, there
were also mystical features such as a lake of flames, magic trees, and walls of iron.
The Duat is also where the Ka resides. Ka in ancient Khemit is your angelic double, your higher self that is assigned to guide you through your life journey and provides you with the correct choices that keeps you on the right track towards your mission on earth, towards each others and towards our planet earth.
Guidance from the Duat always comes to everyone in life and in Sounds of Khemit, we believe that we are being guided from the Duat in order to pass the guidance along, create beauty and meaningful experiences to everyone.
Nhii's Be My Lover opens up with six sublime minutes of deep and elastic house. The vocal is a brilliantly deployed soulful element that takes it to the next level as the lush percussion rolls on. AGMA's Rantata is a more spiritual vibe, a layered track with rich instrumentals and muttered vocals with warming chords bringing the heat. Zuke & Sanoi then offer Voyager (Remix) which sinks you into a hypnotic groove with cloudy synths and gorgeous twinkling stars really bringing the cosmic vibes.

My musical background is pretty broad. I like to listen to all sorts of music but it always has to be something interesting that tickles my brain. Be it the recording, mixing, overall vibe or musicianship. All music has its place and can inspire.

"The last track of the album is written for my little boy. Over the process of writing the new record, I became a parent, which inspired me to write something simple, somber and calm without any beats. This track was entirely recorded at Tom’ Broome's studio, and we used his piano mixed super close for a very intimate feel so you can hear all the little sounds around the piano.

We felt it needed something more in the low end, so we ended up using a Fender Rhodes for the bass. I took the recordings home and crafted the soundscape that the main chord progression sits on to create the feeling of being frozen in time, inside a combination of happiness and love."

Jonas was bitten by the electronica bug at a wholesome age of fourteen and after studying music it was not long before the hedonism and creativity of Berlin came calling.
Plunging through techno genres his thirst for fresh brought him to N.Z in 2015 and has been impressing ever since.
Constantly developing as an artist and finding expression through music are some of the key factors that drive him, whether it be in the studio or behind the decks. Jonas's Love for all things electronic shines through.
Sanoi has used the last year to bring all his skills to the table, Playing major festivals, putting the name Sanoi on everybody's lips with his meticulous club sets...providing the soundtracks to peoples lives with his in clubs and festivals and unleashing his well honed production skills on labels like Bar 25, Beat & Path, A Tribe Called Kotori and Zehn Records.
Sanois productions are Groove laden, organic,melodic, mischevious, and fun. The type of music crowds want to hear and Djs want to play.
