Trash Poem (II) is a piece for voice and fixed media. The text lists trash items I spotted in public places in a period of some days, while fixed media is a soundscape of recordings of trash-related sounds: throwing trash into bins, sounds of trash compactors, trash trucks, unloading trash, etc. The work seeks a pathway between lyrical, meditative, environmental, every-day and absurd, while also, by leaving a degree of freedom to the performer, creates spaces for many different interpretations.

In the past couple of days I created a short sound piece using ChatGPT. ChatGPT works with text, not sound, so my approach was to ask it to create a program that synthesizes sound of a certain description. Similar could be done, I imagine, with prerecorded sounds, like I could ask it to create a program that combines prerecorded sounds in a certain way, but I haven't tried that yet. The resulting synthesized sound is simpler than I had originally intended, because it turned out that there is quite a limitation on how complex a program ChatGPT can create before going "off the rails" and losing the thread. After the conversation I asked it to summarize the last successful result into a new prompt. The result is this 1-minute piece to which I gave the title Etude on Sound Blocks with Normal Distribution.

The prompts:

1. Can you create a C program that generates a 5 minute long wav file (44100, stereo, 16bit), which contains 100 sound masses, each of which is between 1 and 5 seconds long, each being a chord of 20-70 square waves, with individual frequencies ranging between 80Hz and 1000Hz?

2. Can you make it mono instead, and add crescendo in 25 of them and decrescendo in 25 of them?

3. Would it be possible for 10 of them to be like a raffal, meaning that they have quick up-down-up-down change of dynamic?

4. Please generate the whole program - use triangle LFO as envelope for raffals.

Chaos Terrain

Cloudspotting for violin and piano explores an 11-chord sequence traversed cyclically 10 times, where the step increases by one with every traversal. Successive traversals of the chord sequence create a generative soundscape dominated by four note patterns in the piano, groups of long notes in the violin, and unusual harmonic shifts. Floating violin phrases have inspired the title, recalling clouds in slow motion across the sky. The work aims to find unexplored possibilities, new meaning and feeling in traditional consonant harmonies and familiar sound textures.
