Santoor is a trapezoid ancient instrument with 72 strings.  Each 4 string is then grouped as one and tuned to one note. So on each column you have 9 notes. There are 4 columns and 2 types of string. steel strings and bronze.

Santoor is played with wooden hammers. Many people including me put a linen pad under the hammer’s tips to make the sound softer. 

It can be said that Santoor is a fore-father of piano. Or we can say xyliphon is the fore-father of both and in east it became Santoor and in west it became piano. It's only a theory.
