The song dated back to at least 18 months earlier when it was tried out in soundcheck during a Controversy Tour show./References

The track was sent to Miles Davis (in both instrumental and vocal versions) in January 1986. Miles Davis added trumpet to the song on 1 March 1986 at Capitol Recording Studio, Los Angeles CA, USA.
