CLIMATE COUNCIL CEO…AMANDA MCKENZIE says… safeguard mechanisms are being put in place so that Australia can move away from fossil fuel energy.

The GREENS have made a deal with LABOR to put safeguard mechanism in place to start legislation towards climate change. These changes will tighten the budget and force AUSTRALIA’S two hundred and fifteen biggest carbon polluters to back down. 
CLIMATE COUNCIL CEO…AMANDA MCKENZIE says… a hard cap is essential to the success in stopping climate change. But the opposition states that businesses will move to ASIA if the GREENS continue to put pressure on them. 
“The Opposition’s critique is just nonsense. It’s just obviously not true – those institutions will stay in Australia…they’ll keep doing what they’re doing. This gives them an incentive to start moving away from fossil fuel energy”
“We are real about this, we are going to be getting our emissions down over time and gives legitimacy to the scheme.
On the FIRST OF JULY the safeguard mechanisms are due to kick off.
Although the GREENS are confident… there is still talk of new coal developments or gas projects still the works.

We asked La Trobe University students their thoughts about the recent findings on echidnas.

GRAB: *sound of echidnas*

What you just listened to was the first recording of echidnas communicating with each other. Curtin University Researchers in Perth recorded the sound while studying the echidnas at Dryandra National Park near Narrogin, Western Australia.

Masters student in Chemistry James explains what he thought it sounded like

GRAB: “maybe a horse”

And James wasn’t the only one. Bachelor of Arts student, Elise, also agreed that the echidna sounds were nothing like she had thought. 

GRAB: “I think very similar to a hedgehog, like squeaking.”

Chemistry PHD student Azzi says that this new discovery is important for not only scientists but also for residents living near native habitats.

GRAB “I used to live in Bendigo and we did get a lot of noise from animals just on the ceiling and around the house and things like that. So if you know what they are, you wouldn't probably call pest control and be like, ‘Oh, it’s this’. Then you'll know it's a native animal and that it'll just go away.”

Good afternoon, I’m SARAH VARCOE and this is the 2pm news update.

Prime Minister ANTHONY ALBANESE has confirmed he will be traveling to CHINA in NOVEMBER. This trip came about after accepting XI JINPING’S invitation to attend the CHINA INTERNATIONAL IMPORT EXPO. Mr. ALBANESE says his attendance at the expo is an important step towards ensuring a stable and productive relationship with China.

To the east of BROKEN HILL in NEW SOUTH WALES, researchers from AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM, UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY and the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY excavated a dingo burial. Zooarchaeologist REBECCA JONES found one rib of the dingo had a possible healed fracture that was likely cared by First Nations people around 3,500 years ago. The DNA analysis into this discovery will help pinpoint the burial date and relation to other dingoes from its time.
