Viking "Berserker"

"New Mexico Rain" was written by Michael Hearne, "Night Rider's Lament" was by Michael Burton. I used to hear Doug Marquis play "New Mexico Rain" most nights at the closing campfire when I worked at Philmont, but a few nights he would play "Night Rider's Lament" instead. I played the music on his days off, but I had trouble learning the words to "NRL", and had trouble learning the guitar for "NMR". Several months later, I figured out a facsimile of the guitar, based off of what I could remember from Doug explaining the intro to me. Both songs were done by the Tobasco Donkeys, one on each album, so I was able to listen to those, and the songs are forever linked in my mind as the serious songs at closing. I thought, why chose between them?

RIP Peter Green, and thank you for the music. I have performed this song on a weekly basis for much of the past year, and with the news of Peter's death earlier today, I decided to record it.

Before the Beginning

Inspired by a friend's song, I took the beginning of the melody of one line, reversed the chord change, and the rest of the song grew out of that.

On This Line

Written after John Prine passed away, I had been playing along with one of his songs, and as I set the guitar down, the melody for this song popped into my head, and I picked it back up. I had this written about 30 minutes later.
