We are delighted to welcome one of our all-time favourite Norwegian producers to the Phonica Mix Series - Bård Aasen Lødemel aka Skatebård. Dating back to the early 2000s, Skatebård's predominantly house and techno-focused productions have been picked up and released by such labels as Sex Tags Mania, Bordello A Parigi, Full Pupp, Untz Untz, Live At Robert Johnson and, of course, his own Digitalo Enterprises imprint. People usually talk about Berlin, London, New York when discussing electronic music hotspots, and Paris doesn't always get its due. Case in point? It produced Jennifer Cardini, one of the most distinctive DJs to to ever come out of the city. (She's lived in Germany for a while, but the point stands.) Her sound lands somewhere between disco, house and EBM, rooted in a groovy, post-modern chug. You'll hear nu-disco, industrial, techno and electro too, usually built around big hooks. It's a sound that is not only instantly recognizable, but instantly likable.

As a producer, Cardini also deserves her flowers. She's been putting out records since the mid-'90s, and with her first label Correspondant, she's built up a rock-solid catalogue from artists like Fort Romeau, Man Power, Cormac and more. More recently she started the Dischi Autunno imprint, a place for more crossover-friendly music that indulges Cardini's tastes for all things melodic (and maybe a little goth).

Cardini's RA Podcast is a beautiful summary of all these ideas and influences. It's hard and banging, sure, but also lithe and athletic. There are plenty of tracks with the surge of EBM or the stab of industrial. Lots of reverb. Decadent melodies undergirded by tough drum patterns. And it's paced as expertly as you'd expect from someone who's been DJing for over 30 years. In the interview below, Cardini says she "loves how the young generation is digesting four decades of club / rave culture," and you can hear that history living and breathing in Cardini's DJing, too.

Those tender moments of cathartic house euphoria are what Sara Miller strives for, as the Irish-born DJ and producer conducts blissful trajectories through the then and now from her adopted home of Berlin.

Her artistry both behind the decks and in the studio is gleefully inspired by Berlin’s distinct hedonism, indulging the city’s timeless dancefloor energy to enact glorious ecstasy upon ravers. Astral melodies, rubbery basslines and soaring breaks embrace under Sara’s inherent exuberance, an experiential wonder that has seen her remain a constant presence in such Berlin clubbing institutions as :://About Blank, ELSE and Watergate, as well as regular appearances in her hometown of Dublin and across Europe. Celebrated mixes for HÖR, Oye Records, Tiger Tapes and Permanent Vacation also further her cause.

Sara’s Naive Melodies party series, founded in 2012 at the influential Kreuzberg club Kleine Reise, provided the groundwork for her ascent. These parties, along with regular appearances at the legendary Renate, allowed her ample headroom to hone her craft. A typical night would see Sara indulge in genre-bending selections that ran the gauntlet of progressive house, italo, acid, disco, deep house and lots in between. She also qualified to become an audio engineer, which saw her respected practice inspire her turn to studio work.

“Lunar Theory”, released this year on Permanent Vacation, marked Sara’s highly anticipated first solo EP following her debut production “Orange Sea” released on the label in 2021. Tapping into Sara’s vast musical knowledge in 4 dynamic house variations, “Lunar Theory” highlights her vibrant world within the celestial dance. Each track bounces along with purposeful energy while embracing lush harmonics, plush pads and bubbling acid tones along its way. A wonderful record that's bound to soundtrack the glorious summer dancing season ahead.
