Icelandic teenage wunderkind Samaris’ first UK release comes in the shape of an eponymously-titled album on 29th July. Samaris compiles their two Icelandic-released EPs, Hljóma Þú (2011) and Stofnar falla (recorded at Sigur Rós’ Sundlaugin studio with Gunnar Tynes of múm, 2012.

Combining disparate elements of electronics (Þórður Kári Steinþórsson), clarinet (Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir) and Jófríður Ákadóttir’s haunting voice, Samaris mix glacial electronica and bold, percussive beats with haunting chant-like vocals - the lyrics culled from nineteenth century Icelandic poems. Viltu Vitrast for example retells an Icelandic folk tale about villages who ask for help from a supernal being, but worry it will choose not to manifest its power on Earth. The effect is simultaneously ancient and modern – an ethereal sound filled with dark spaces and alien atmosphere. 

Formed in 2011 in Reykjavik, within months Samaris had won both the Icelandic Músíktilraunir (past winners include the likes of Of Monsters and Men) and Kraumur Award. The band’s show at Iceland Airwaves in 2012, attracted the attention of Line Of Best Fit, Drowned In Sound and NPR amongst many others. Singer Jófríður also performs with her sister Ásthildur in the more folk-inclined Pascal Pinion.

For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

"Don't You Start" by Sleepy Kitty

Taken from their forthcoming, sophomore album, "Projection Room," due for release January 14, 2014 via Euclid Records.

What do Pavement, MGM musicals, Robert Rauschenberg, Iggy Pop and Jean Luc Godard have in common? Not much, to most people. But for St. Louis-based duo Sleepy Kitty, all these sublimely weird and seemingly contradictory art forms are source material and inspiration for their forthcoming sophomore release, Projection Room, due January 14, 2014.

Projection Room is a gorgeous art-punk achievement by the band that sees them creating a cohesive new sound, while still including flagrant waves to their pop culture influences. It’s art-school reference and experimentation with rock instruments and flaming guitar solos, but a musical theater backbone and '60s stacked harmonies. And it's catchy as hell.

Sleepy Kitty began to take shape at the end of 2008, when Evan Sult, who was drumming for Chicago's Bound Stems after an eight-year stint in late-'90s alt-radio band Harvey Danger, met Paige Brubeck at a party. She was studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and playing in the all-girl band Stiletto Attack. For a project that originally began as an outlet for the duo to do “weirdo stuff that our own bands weren’t interested in doing,” as Sult says, Sleepy Kitty has quickly become a full-fledged enterprise. Based out of their self-described “art castle,” a studio space in the middle of Cherokee Street in St. Louis, MO, Sleepy Kitty is a multimedia project: the two collaborate professionally on music, rock posters, album artwork, and fine art together. It’s this space that has birthed two Sleepy Kitty EP releases and a debut LP, Infinity City (2011), and is home to a blossoming art and graphics project under the same name.

The band is gaining momentum at an incredible pace, securing awards as Best Indie Band several years running in the Riverfront Times, St. Louis' weekly paper, and scoring support slots for the likes of Deerhoof, Best Coast and Jeff The Brotherhood, as well as performances at LouFest and Middle of the Map Fest in both 2012 and 2013. With Paste Magazine calling their 2011 release “spectacularly catchy,” with “just enough cute...combined with distorted rock and a heavy drum beat,” 2014’s Projection Room is a natural step forward for the duo, and is their own garage-pop dream.

Black English - the band from Echo Park, Los Angeles - began as a home recording project in July 2011. In a small house on Mohawk Street a group of friends gathered to explore music free from any agenda.

The outcome was a sound has instilled a collective desire that, for a brief moment, perhaps all within earshot might feel unified.

Black English's debut full length "El Prado" will be released February 18th on Arts & Crafts.

Brooklyn NY – Primary Records is proud to announce No Turn Before The Shoreline, the first full length release from Sleepers Work. Sleepers Work is William Flynn (St Vincent, Acrylics, Aufgang, and The Prigs), a multi-instrumentalist and producer currently calling Brooklyn home.

No Turn Before The Shoreline is the product of years of listening, collecting, questioning, splicing, synthesizing, and brilliantly combining sounds in a meticulous quest to reflect a state of truth and comfort through a highly polished musical looking-glass. Each song on the album has its own birthing story, a living breathing product of months of gestation. The opening track, ‘Dawn And The Moon’, depicts the insomnia stricken emotions of a mind racing throughout the night and the duality of beauty and anxiety that the sleepless soul experiences at sunrise. When asked about the final track on the album, ‘Through The Window,’ Flynn traces its origins back to, “thinking about my grandparents and great grandparents and wondering how they experienced New York while living here through- out the various decades of the 20th century.”

Flynn produced and assembled No Turn Before The Shoreline over a 6 month period using his own library of found and created material. “I would just grab a sound, start pitching it, pulling it, looping it, messing with the attack and release. I found the specific moments I liked, and then moved on to grabbing the next layer in the same way.” Demo recordings of his sister, instrumental stems from various projects he had engineered or played on, and field recordings are just some of the sounds that were diligently combined to create ambi- ent song worlds. Through the album artwork and thematic fragments peppered throughout these recordings Flynn brings a vibrant depiction of New York City, past and present, to life, with all of its different personalities and nuances.

As a jazz conservatory survivor, proficient multi-instrumentalist, and effortlessly creative improviser, Flynn has performed and recorded with a huge range of artists in his career. His sound design and composition work has placed him in collaboration with artists and directors including Tom Kuntz, with whom he created a ten hour long remix of material provided by Lucky Dragons for Kuntz’s “Bug” audio-visual installation which premiered at the Sydney Opera House’s Vivid Sydney festival in 2011. He also contributed work to Tom’s latest installation, which showcased music by Dan Deacon and premiered at the Sonos Gallery in Los Angeles this past spring. Flynn also worked as a sound designer on Daft Punk’s music video for ‘Derezzed’ from the Tron: Legacy soundtrack.

No Turn Before the Shoreline will be released on limited edition, 12 inch vinyl by Primary Records in Spring 2014. It will be available online and in record stores across North America.
