‘Solar Nights’ is the long awaited second album from German nu-disco star Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets. Released on Eskimo Recordingsthis April, ‘Solar Nights’follows on from Bernhardt’s critically acclaimed, and Gold certified, debut LP ‘Panorama Pacifico’ and features 14 tracks of smooth disco and leftfield pop sounds with guest appearances from the likes of Future Classic’s Panama, NTEIBINT, David Harks, Niya Wells, Emma Brammer and Anduze.
 
The global success of ‘Panorama Pacifico’ has seen Bernhardt coaxed out from his remote studio in one of Germany’s ancient forests to play to fans across the world, from South Korea to Mexico and beyond, experiences that inspired both the album itself and its title, ‘Solar Nights’.
 
“In recent years the world’s become a smaller, a more inter-connected place. It can be dark and cold here, with snow all around, and the next day I can be playing to people on a beach. Somewhere on the planet it's always daytime or summer, but beyond that day and night just blend into each other these days,”Tim explains. “We have daytime discos so you can go and party whilst the sun is still high in the sky and you can go and hit the gym at night. But day or night, Satin Jackets is your soundtrack.”
 
And what a soundtrack it is, from the opening chords of opening ‘Welcome Back’it’s clear we’re in safe hands here, the warm pads, delicate guitars and pianos providing the perfect introduction to the album. Whether it’s the slow burning seductive pop of tracks like ‘Just Like You’, piano led house tracks like ‘String It Again’, the Balearic haze of ‘All For You’or bonafide hits like the Nordic inspired ‘Northern Lights’and ‘Mirage’that between them have already scored well over 10 million streams across streaming platforms, ‘Solar Nights’takes everything we loved from ‘Panorama Pacifico’and polishes it to an extra high sheen.
 
And in an age when rough and raw production is seen as an easy shorthand for authenticity Tim’s love of ultra-smooth production has made him an unlikely iconoclast, “I had always been fascinated by how glossy people like Nile Rodgers made their music,”he reveals. “It always sounded like the musical equivalent of a fashion magazine’s cover. I’d been making more underground music for a while but really wanted to go in totally the other direction and instead create a really smooth, polished sound.”
 
That obsession with sonic fidelity shines through across every track on ‘Solar Nights’, and the years since his debut was released have been well spent perfecting his craft. “Even in just the last couple of years I’ve made some big changes to how I produce music. Compared to my debut everything under the hood has changed here,” he explains. “Every day, with every production I’m learning new things and when I listen to these new tracks, the depth in the mixes, the clarity, I like to think ‘Solar Nights’ as Satin Jackets but in 3D.“
 
From wanting to recreate the sound of magazine covers to appearing on them, the past few years has been quite some journey for the still enigmatic producer. The man behind the golden mask may prefer to stay out of sight but ‘Solar Nights’ reveals him to be fully in control, producing music that reflects the glamour and glitz of 70s Manhattan, artfully updated for the 21st century.

Having established himself as one of the biggest names on the Nu-Disco scene with his debut album, Tim Bernhardt AKA Satin Jackets, cemented that success with his 2019 follow up, ‘Solar Nights’, that saw the German producer broaden his sound, collaborating with songwriters and vocalists from around the world to stunning effect. Returning to the studio in 2020 Bernhardt has been inspired to return to his instrumental roots, the lessons learnt from the past few years applied to the dreamy, laid back electronic music that he first made his name with and which can now be heard on the 4 track ‘Hidden Treasures’ EP.

“Over the past few years I’ve made pop-crossover singles like ‘Mirage’, worked with some incredible indie artists like Panama on Automatic and last but certainly not least had the biggest Satin Jackets hit to date with ‘Northern Lights’, featuring David Harks, all great vocal releases,” explains Tim.

“This year though something shifted and I felt the need to again turn my hand to producing instrumental tracks. That resulted in the ‘Golden Cage’ EP, but even there we eventually got Cypriot vocalist Metaxas to add vocals to one of the tracks, ‘Meridian Gateway’. That turned out great but it made me realise just how important it was to focus on crafting music that was completely my own and can shine without the need of vocals.”

That realisation led to the ‘Hidden Treasures’ EP, 4 tracks that are 100% undiluted and unfiltered Satin Jackets, imbued from start to finish with the chilled vibes and charm of his debut, the technical skill and musicality of its follow up, and crucially the confidence of a producer who in 2020 is at the top of his game.

Opening up with the gorgeous ‘Levante’, as balmy a track as Tim has ever produced, its gentle guitar refrain softly picks at your heartstrings as you close your eyes and feel the warm still air of some tropical beach envelop you when for just one beautiful moment the most energetic thing to do is reach for your drink.

If that hasn’t got you in a relaxed mood then ‘Hundred Fifty Up’ will definitely do the job. From the opening notes you'll be instantly transported far away from the mundane world by a susurration of chimes, synth pads, delicate melodies and textures that will soothe the soul as they wash over us.

Just in case you were in danger of becoming too supine, ‘Little Airplanes’ is up next to remind us that for all its laid back splendour the Satin Jackets back-catalogue contains plenty of tracks that will soon have you on your feet. Still while Tim may have pushed the tempo here the mood remains one of sublime, rather than fist pumping, ecstasy. Close your eyes and again you’ll find yourself far from your quotidian experience and back to that rooftop or pool party you’ve never been able to forget, surrounded by love and dancing.

Finally we close out the EP with 'Sassa and Back', a reflective slice of heavenly disco, underpinned by elegant strings that tease us throughout the track before stirring into something truly transcendent yet at the same time quietly understated.

“I’ll always enjoy working with great vocalists,” affirms Tim. “But for me instrumental tracks have this magic, this power that unfolds in their own unique way. Unbound by any kind of song structure or decisive meaning I can design them in my own way and focus more on the mood and the feeling. That’s why I decided to continue on that path with this EP, and the result is four tracks that tell a story about a particular chapter of my life. At the same time they’re open enough for the listener to insert their own story into it.”

Hidden Treasures EP

For a decade now the name Satin Jackets has been synonymous with sublimely laidback Balearic house and sun kissed disco. The brainchild of German producer Tim Bernhardt who, following a successful career producing house music under a variety of different aliases, launched Satin Jackets as a vehicle to explore his lifelong love of disco and the clean, polished productions of artists like CHIC and Trevor Horn.

“I had always been fascinated by just how glossy people like Nile Rogers made their music,” Bernhardt explains. “It always sounded like the musical equivalent of a fashion magazine’s cover. I’d been making somewhat more underground music for a while but really wanted to go in totally the other direction and create this really smooth, polished sound.”

That first Satin Jackets release, the dreamlike You Make Me Feel Good, would set the tone for what was to come. Released on the iconic Belgian label Eskimo Recordings, which had previously helped launch the careers of artists like Aeroplane and Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, it was an instant hit. Its graceful melodies, airy textures and yearning chorus became the soundtrack to the setting sun at parties worldwide.

With almost metronomic precision You Make Me Feel Good was followed by a string of acclaimed singles and remixes for some of the genre’s biggest names, including Goldroom and Blank & Jones, establishing Bernhardt as one of the most exciting new names in the nu-disco scene. While the face behind the mask may have remained a mystery, Satin Jackets’ warm, polished take on disco soon made the name familiar to music lovers around the world.

Taking things to the next level, 2016’s debut Satin Jackets album, Panorama Pacifico, firmly cemented Bernhardt’s position as both Eskimo’s flagship artist and as one of the biggest nu-disco producers around. Winning praise from the likes of Mixmag, DJ Mag and Groove, the album has gone on to click up over 75 million streams on Spotify alone, and Satin Jackets’ golden mask has become a regular fixture behind the decks at clubs and festivals from Mexico City to Seoul.

2019’s follow up, Solar Nights, would see Bernhardt further develop and refine the Satin Jackets sound. Rapturously received by fans, DJs and press alike, the album, propelled by singles like the global hit ‘Northern Lights’, proved that, much like the original disco artists that first inspired the project, Bernhardt was just as capable of crafting radio friendly pop hits as tracks for the dance floor.

While the pandemic may have put plans for global tours and festival appearances on hold, Bernhardt kept himself busy as clubland went into hibernation. Having relocated to Munich just before lockdown, a succession of singles that ranged from out-and-out pop collaborations to instrumental, chilled-out tracks as well as a series of live Lockdown Streams kept Bernhardt in touch with his ever growing legion of fans. Indeed, it was those Lockdown Streams and the response from his fans that allowed Bernhardt to rediscover, in his own words, “the connection between what I do and what people feel” and sow the seeds for what was to come.

Now as we emerge blinking into the new world, Bernhardt returns with Satin Jackets’ third album, the aptly titled Reunion. Where the first two Satin Jackets albums saw Bernhardt work to first develop his own sound and then elevate his productions to another level, Reunion reveals a musician and producer wholly at ease with both his abilities in the studio and artistic vision. 

From blissful instrumental tracks that seem to effortlessly float above the clouds, through to bittersweet wistful pop songs featuring the likes of Australian star Panama, Belgian singer Ivy Falls, US based vocalist Metaxas and up-and-coming British singer Tailor, Reunion is a strikingly confident album that layers new depths and dimensions to the Satin Jackets sound and sets the stage for the next exciting chapter of the Satin Jackets story.
