Located in West Java, Indonesia, theres a lush scenic 4hour train ride south of chaotic Jakarta which transports you to the more humble city of Bandung. DJMUNIR, Indonesia's booogiedisco stalwart and Midnight Runner head honcho supplies us with SPACEDUST SELECTION #15. We're very pleased and thankful to have this young talent on board and fuse together this killer mix. Includes some special unreleased edits form the main man himself! Can you pick them out? We were going to write something up but this great little article provides an insight on the rise of the local Bdung disco scene, and an introduction into our guest selector, Mr Harry 'MUNIR' Septandry.

“In a country with a musical traditional rooted in percussive instruments, the groovy boogie of disco struck a major chord with Indonesians from all walks of life. This fresh genre’s popularity soared even higher with the emergence of roller discos and bowling alleys as social hubs for the youth, as the nightclubs of the day were widely considered to be heroin dens; unwelcome places for the dance-happy youth to congregate. But alas, as the decades passed, so did the country’s infatuation with disco. The genre that had been so crucial to the emergence of a youthful subculture in modern Indonesia had been almost completely forgotten, lost to thrift shops or discount sections of records stores. Which exactly where Munir first discovered it.

Munir Septandry first found his obsession of record collecting in his early twenties. By 2011, Munir and some friends began taking these records and remastering them into DJ-friendly edits, and the imprint Midnight Runners was born.

Munir believes that the essence of disco is its ability to make people dance while de-stressing the mind. Once he selects a track, he loads it into his DAW where the mastering process begins. He then adjusts the levels so that they are compatible with modern sound systems, extra drums are added, and certain parts are extended. The result is furiously funky tropical disco that will wreck any dance floor.

In a move to republish these forgotten gems, Midnight Runners began compiling these edits into albums, and the Nusantara Tropic Disco project was born. Nusantara translates to ‘archipelago,’ which is fitting as Munir strives to find the best disco tracks from across the world’s largest archipelago nation, transforming what started as a pet project into a digital archive of Indonesia’s once vibrant disco scene.

The Nusantara Tropic Disco volumes have gained worldwide recognition through the Amsterdam record label JIWAJIWA (jiwa being the word for ‘soul’ in Indonesian), who’ve pushed the compilation albums in Holland, while Indonesian imprints like Diskoria, Selekta Pop, Funkbox and Jammalam have supported the Midnight Runners’ work locally"
