[ELD-03] Jacob B - Intergalactic EP

‘Techno three ways’ is the order of the day from Irish newcomer Richie Corrigan and his accomplice Jacob B, twisting the genre in a trio of directions like a Michelin starred menu might reinterpret a humble ingredient. As a DJ, Corrigan has supported Dave Clarke, running his Purgatory events alongside the label of the same name and releasing elsewhere on Concrete Berlin, Underground Records and Complexed Records.

‘Paradise’ thumps along at a clip, classic stabs manically cutting against off-beat bass whomps and tuned percussion melodies, hi-hats stuttering all the while. Snatches of East Asian melody waft in and out of focus and the melodic progression of the bassline adds a gently euphoric edge to this propulsive track.

‘Get Up’ heads into tribal techno territory, all juddering low end and menacingly toned percussive hits. Pulsing FX and evolving rhythmic structures keep the intrigue levels high as this juggernaut of a track presses on, full steam ahead.

‘Lagoon’ rounds off this well-balanced EP with a more housey take on techno, where filtered disco loops circulate under percolating percussive rhythms. Snatches of bright strings and powerful vocal refrains punctuate while the funk-fuelled bass slams hard. A piano twinkles somewhere in the distance as the layers of the track ebb and flow into each other in mesmerising fashion.

Fun projects need to be shared. In this case I like to give away my newest fun project - I did in my free time. Hashtag is a combination of five elements in one track. With the focus on a snare drum roll, a upward pitching part, a melody, a fat baseline and acid elements. Acid in that case means, crazy sounds in a groovy beat. Hope you like it - have fun.

Foremost international techno outlet Drumcode is delighted to announce the release of its next full-length album, ‘Satellite’, by enduring Italian techno talent Sam Paganini.

Though he has been active since the mid nineties, recent years have been hugely successful for Sam, with searing techno EPs coming on revered labels such as Riche Hawtin’s Plus8, Sven Vath’s Cocoon and of course, Adam Beyer’s Drumcode. In his time he has been responsible for underground hits like ‘Zoe’, ‘Polyester’ and ‘Fire In My Arms’, all of which demonstrate his dynamic understanding of sexy, dark and hypnotic techno grooves and at the same time have earned him plenty of great Beatport chart positions as well as respect from the best in the game.

Incredibly, ‘Satellite’ is Sam’s first full-length album. Informed by his DJ gigs at legendary places like Berghain in Berlin and Cielo in New York, the album starts with a dystopian bit of sonic scene setting, as if a space ship is charging up ready to take off.

From there it’s a case of getting straight down to business. ‘Another Chance’ is a spacey bit of cantering techno and ‘White’ is rooted in devastating kick drums and is riddled with serrated synth lines that build lots of great techno pressure. ‘Down’ is an undulating bit of funky techno complete with choice vocal flourishes and tracks like ‘Lotus’ are prime offerings from the deeper end of the scale.

No two tracks sound the same on Satellite: Sam is always teasing out a new bit of texture, nailing a slightly different vibe or exploring different amounts of light and dark throughout the course of this most excellent album. This is evidenced by diverse cuts like ‘Dusty’, ‘Toxic’ and ‘Rave’.

Despite ‘Satellite’ being Sam’s debut album, it showcases his seductive style in all its glory across 12 fantastic tracks that will leave you begging for more.

MadTech Records kick off 2015 with the ‘Switch’ EP from Kalyde, backed with a remix from hotly tipped artist Applebottom.
Richard Main aka Kalyde is yet another exciting young talent emerging out of London, UK, initially coming onto the underground house scene via the collaborative Az&Tor project which released material via MadTech Records where he returns to here for a solo venture. This release marks the first of 2015 for the MadTech Records imprint, following a string of successful singles in 2014 from the likes of Kry Wolf, No Artificial Colours, Mia Dora and Celsius to name but a few.

Opening the release is title cut ‘Switch’ which sees Kalyde employ an array of gritty, distorted percussive elements, square wave bass licks and bleeping synth shots as the driving force, while heavily processed vocal chops and intricate modulations throughout the composition keep things in an ever-unfolding state.

Following is the second original from Kalyde entitled ‘OB’, retaining a similar frenzied feel to the preceding cut with glitching synth hooks, a rugged bass hook and raw drum samples, yet instilling a dreamy air to the vibe with floating pad lines and bright vocal murmurs.

Man of the moment Applebottom then steps up last to round off the package, treating us to his groove-led, energetic style with loose stripped-back rhythms driving the record along while manipulating the original’s synth lines to generate a mind-bending, acid-tinged feel over its four-minute duration.
Kalyde’s ‘Switch’ EP is out on MadTech Records 19th Jan (Beatport) and 2nd Feb (General) 2015.

German producer Paul Beller aka Ben Mono has been releasing material for over a decade now, principally via the Compost Records imprint in the early stages of his career though further notable affiliations fall in the shape of Permanent Vacation, Exploited, Gomma, Ed Banger and Strictly Rhythm. Here we see him push on adding MadTech as yet another driving force alliance, slotting him alongside Citizen, Cera Alba, No Artificial Colours and Mia Dora on the roster.

Title cut ‘Why?’ kicks things off and sees Ben Mono offer up a bass led percussive workout, laying its focus on bubbling drum hits, frenzied synth wobbles and warbling subs, while ‘Rather Kill Me’ tips the focus over to a garage tinged aesthetic with an elongated, grainy bass hook and dark stab sequences sat alongside hooky vocal chops and sporadic synth flourishes.

Russia’s Xandl then round off the package with his take on ‘Why?’ - offering up an acid tinged interpretation with squelching bass licks and a bumpy rhythmic swing.

Danniel teams up with Karretero for this two-tracker, and the boys&#8217; intentions are clearly stated from the beginning.&nbsp; The title track&#8217;s shuffling snares make way for cavernous effects and classy percussion, while a warped vocal ensures that the chrome-plated ride is sprinkled with futuristic dust.&nbsp; &#8220;Formatz&#8221; is a bit more upbeat, with persistent hats providing the fuel, and subliminal riffing bubbling below the surface, together with subtle stabs.

We welcome Ramon Tapia to Agile as he whips out a cut that never lets up, courtesy of a persistent stab that manically runs throughout the length of the affair.&nbsp; Meanwhile, the locomotive rhythm section chugs away effortlessly and provides the perfect backdrop for subliminal synth washes to do their thing.&nbsp; Label boss Uto Karem is on the remix, and he dubs things out in his version, keeping things claustrophobic and tense.&nbsp; Cavernous effects offer some welcomed breathing space and the sub bass rumbles on.

NY's Finest - Do You Feel Me (Bontan Remix)

Jacob&#8217;s debut offering on Say What? is a giant nod to the roots of the sound with all three tracks acting like a nitrous oxide-injected retrospect.&nbsp; The stomping &#8220;Cassette Tape&#8221; kicks things off with a classic -yet beefed up-&nbsp; drumset and literally screams &#8220;less-is-more&#8221; as spoken word passages and familiar chords each play integral roles in the arrangement.&nbsp; The title track is up next and, as expected, drums from the past lead the way together with a cheeky sample and even an old-school breakbeat is introduced, reinforcing the already authentic feel.&nbsp; The package would not be complete without pianos, so the aptly-titled &#8220;Piano&#8221; closes the affair with some enormous low end, courtesy of the mighty kick and rumbling bass.

Nico certainly makes a statement in his debut for our label, and &#8220;The Raw Bitch&#8221; is a firm testament to his approach with its galloping rhythm section, looped-out diva vocals, and surgical-precision arrangement.&nbsp; &#8220;Martini Cocktail&#8221; is slightly toned-down, yet packs plenty of punch with more shuffling snares and mandatory Old Skool stabs. Persisting on the drum workouts, &#8220;Solutions&#8221; wraps things up subliminally and throws in an anthemic spoken-word vocal to spice things up.

The mysterious KIKDRM lands on Say What? with a threefold offering consisting of some very dirty cuts. 
&#8220;Keep On&#8221; kicks things off with rumbling sub bass and metallic synths, while shuffling snares pave the way for mangled spoken word passages to spice things up. 
&#8220;The Roll&#8221; continues in the same vein, shifting the focus to cavernous percussion and streamlined synths which bring us to the aptly-titled &#8220;The Vox&#8221;, where we are introduced to a sleazy bassline, complete with vocal edits and discordant phrases bordering on psycho territory.

Jacob makes his Phobiq debut and kicks off his EP with the haunting title track which twists and turns with hypnotic spoken sword snippets and grinding hats. Things continue in the same vein in his collaboration with DJOKO, as we are introduced to manic claps, percussion galore and Old School stabs. &#8220;MDxx High&#8221; offers a more subliminal approach at first, courtesy of the rubber-band bassline, but then flips everything around and breaks into an ultra-retro synth lead. &#8220;Tribe&#8221; closes up with a firm nod to the roots of this sound, and before we know it we are witnessing an actual siren burst out of nowhere.
