Full Moon in Leo 🌕

Things could feel heightened during this Full Moon, or even extreme - it's a time of expansion and greatly magnified perception. Right now we're able to see the full growth of our intentions - the seeds we planted at the New Moon two weeks ago. 

Today, I welcome Atlanta based duo, @flora_musica to the 51st episode. They have come up with a simply superb way to encapsulate the energy of this Leo Full Moon by offering up a silky smooth backdrop of slower Deep & Organic House textures.

Lunar Expressions | 051 - Flora

I've been hesitant to share this publicly since I recorded it, because I know it's not for everyone. It is truly a sonic experiment that traverses a lot of vibrational terrain ... So I already know not everybody will vibe. 😅 Regardless, I had always told myself that it was only going to be for my ears & personal process, but it felt like the right time to make it public as we are currently in the depths of a Gemini New Moon portal. 🌑  A time for self-advocacy & path-forging. So, here we go. 

I originally recorded this as a means to process the death of my Father, and the near simultaneous birth of my Son, 2 months ago. The mythic-ness of the timing (or lack thereof) between these incredible life-events is something I could have never imagined would be possible, yet they both happened... and I was left in their wake to make sense of it all. There I sat in deep grief, accompanied by an almost overwhelming sense of joy.

In the sparse moments of free-time I was given after Rael was born, I found my fingers gravitating ... almost yearning towards specific sounds, tracks, and samples that truly seemed to resonate with what I was feeling. Lots of Jazz elements that might Father might've enjoyed in his younger years. Sounds ranging from the bold, experimental riffs of Sun Ra & his Arkestra all the way to the intricate, sometimes explosive compositions of King Crimson. 

There are obscurely minimal, yet melodic structures throughout, though they always find their resolution. I also utilized a good bit of manual pitch manipulation as a means to affect the overall emotional theme, which definitely causes certain tracks to become something else entirely. There are meditative, ambient spaces littered with symphonic over-tones that, at times, become encumbered by chaos & dissonance. The dissonance, I believe to be useful in that the energy of chaos is always followed by a release & surrender into stillness. So, somehow, if you are willing to ride it out, you can find yourself floating in a bed of feathers on the other-side of what might seem an unbearable experience. It's all purposeful.
Another piece to this set's curation is that, while it was coming together, I had envisioned a very intentional space within which it would be listened. A room full of candles ... or perhaps a crackling fire under a Full or New Moon, such as this one. A bowl of copal burning off to the side. A ceremonial circle of individuals gathered with the intention of healing, mending, and perhaps spelunking the depths of their psyche, aided by their medicine of choice. This set, of course, as the backdrop for the experience. 

Truly, it gets weird, and there is real opportunity to evoke the ancient, embodied-self. As the curator of this experience, I find within it ample opportunities for exploration of the mind, a disillusionment of self, and perhaps a re-imagining of one's own internal landscape. A re-visioning of what is possible to perceive as a human-being processing the shape of life. Maybe you'll find something different. Either way, I hope you enjoy the ride, and perhaps receive something of value from the journey.

Lion's Gate Blessings to all.

In numerology, the number eight is symbolized by the infinity symbol (∞) and represents themes of reflection, balancing, opportunity, optimism, and transformation.

My intention with recording this set was to evoke a summation of the experiences we shared together on the dance floor over the course of 2023.

In this 1 hour set, I curated a variety of sounds & moments that I do believe many of you would find an embodied sort of familiarity in + It is my hope that all of you will be able to - in essence - practice, relive & share in those same instances of sonic intelligence with others, outside of Sol Dance. That being said, may each of you continue to thrive & enjoy with your hearts this quintessentially circular journey through light, sound & embodiment. More music to come.

Let this wave act as a reminder of just how possible those moments of dropping in can be. Give yourself the space to fall into each rhythm as it shows up. Honor each of those body-parts, and let your dance take the shape it needs to for you to TRULY arrive in any space or dance-floor!

New Moon in Sagittarius - A wonderful time for starting projects and realizing those procrastinated visions with passion, direction, and vigor. In the midst of all this, we can temper our wilder impulses with a grounded strategic vision to expand in the ways we need most.

This volume is especially appropriate given the forward momentum brought about by this Sagittarian Moon phase, because not only has Aidan Rolfe | @aidanrolfe of Asheville, NC curated a stellar next chapter to the story of Lunar Expressions, but it is part of a dual release on his weekly podcast "Synth Etiquette Radio" where I released a set in tandem with this episode. It's a wonderful thing to collaborate with other humans doing similar work in the world - so, may this be the first of many opportunities together. 

That being said, Aidan's Volume 3 is ripe with potent, percussive moments including a few of my personal favorites by Yotam Avni, Traumer, & Minilogue. Aidan knows how to curate with the vibe of the moon and, as always, I am deeply grateful for his willingness to contribute to the growth of this project.

In this 5Rhythms wave, I offer a succinct and seamless journey with adequate transition time for exploration between each embodied state of being: Flow - Staccato - Chaos - Lyrical - Still.  Use those transitional moments to your benefit by softening, breathing, and allowing the body to use it's own inherent wisdom to open up into the next process.

Ultimately, it is my hope that this wave can & will be used to catalyze your dance in new and profound ways.

Before the dance started, I had the opportunity to facilitate the opening circle where I asked dancers to envision an intention for what they see being cultivated during this dance - and throughout, giving their bodies the permission to truly inhabit those intentions to the fullest capacity.

In 2018 Mario Castro's most important project was born - Never Alone In A Dark Room - A project that focuses on minimal music but where you can also find tracks in Ambient, Experimental Micro-House, Acoustic Rock, Downtempo, Jazz, and Neo-Indie.

In 2019, Never Alone In A Dark Room founded Microativ Hub which is a center of learning in production that will offer guidelines for the musical creation process using modular systems as well as a synths.

In nearly 15 years of utilizing dance as a healing modality, Scott Houston has come to believe in the inherent wisdom of the body and the power of sound to move it. Scott produces & facilitates events that are truly an open path to healing through a communion with the embodied self.

Scott boasts a uniquely diverse range of sonic capacity that spans across all musical genres, masterfully being able to weave any dance-floor from stillness to climax & all the way back down into the deepest states of bliss + contemplation.

Because of this, Scott is known regionally as the go-to sonic-curator for intentional movement-spaces of all kinds as well as truly unique, high-vibrational community experiences.

As an Atlanta based artist & DJ – Scott is known for his collaborative mindset & appearances at regional festivals, as well as local events, parties, rooftops, warehouses, and gatherings all over the city - specifically through his residency with the chic underground music collective Project B.  As such, Scott has had the privilege of vibe-setting for a variety of artists including: Acid Pauli, Mihigh, Gescu, Arapu, Viken Arman, Varhat, Janaret, Bobi Stevkovski & Yoko0. Most recently having joined Tambor Party & Stan Zeff on Afro-House adventures  around ATL & abroad in Egypt. 

Through collaborative efforts with Reciprocity Music, Scott has had the pleasure to play alongside Porangui, Mose, Deya Dova, Liquid Bloom, & Savej.

Scott is also a classically-trained musician of 35+ years, a life-long dancer, accredited 5Rhythms teacher, devoted Husband & Father, performance artist, as well as Co-Founder, Creative Director, and Resident DJ of Sol Dance.
