At the core of art there is a point of view which is unapologetically reflective of our environment. The beauty of art lies within subjective interpretation yet, one's interpretation reflects the individual's character based on their perspective. Crass (definition) - (of persons) so unrefined as to be lacking in discrimination and sensibility. It is of profound consequence that Hip-Hop as a culture is one which has never sat well with an elitist mind-set because of its radical nature on championing the downtrodden cause. Long since surpassing all musical genre in its reaches, there is always a push-back from "authorities" and some would even state, sabotage through a watering down of the culture. Compositions on this particular project reflect an evolving mind-set yet one which still remains astute in its defiance to being funnelled through the narrow passage of acceptance. Politicians often assume the mantle of heroism whilst demonising anything or anyone posing a threat to their ambition. Africa has known an older generation which has smothered the next to lengthen their prime which is past. The greater powers offer assistance in the form of "crocodilian" jaws. Parents pit their children's desires against their self-indulged perception of the future in the name of love. Women and men are at odds in the tangle of their relationships due to gossip culture and yet possessing vastly indulgent spirits. There is a great deal of hypocrisy at work and little responsibility being taken on. So in this case Dimitri & The Scarecrow assume the villainy of branding whilst cutting through the resistance with visceral mercilessness. Essentially labelling me maliciously will not dissuade me from making a valid impression.

The premise of this song is that it feeds off the delusion of the idea that humanity stands in one accord. If we all want peace, it is only logical to assume that my surrounding counterparts would aid me in an effort to make this a reality: A Common Understanding for A Common Undertaking. The reality is that we have a society built on a complex of hierarchies which are established at the expense of our fellow society members. Therefore, the structure of agendas jut out at different levels and thus manifest with selfish, two-faced and insidious connotations. The end result is disappointment and an immense feeling of disloyalty to the values upon which the character singing in the song is raised.

Saving The World

Coming from a release which defended the art of Hip-Hop with "Crass Roots Rap," Dimitri & The Scarecrow went through the global pandemic and thus a performance drought. Usually the world turns to the music in order to recollect itself and reclaim what may have been lost in the midst of great tragedy. In this case, the world was a little more suspicious of the true nature governing the global leaders. Were they truly concerned? Did they know what they were dealing with? Was the lockdown meant to help or impose further upon the liberties of the people? Hence "The Cleansing." A first in a series of EPs meant to be heard in a concierto of different musical movements. Every song is meticulously calculated in regards to composition and placement within the playlist. Themes addressed are rooted in tribal, economic and political machinations which are engineered for civilian divide. There are implants for reminders on staying the course regardless of derailment, reconciliation with self for the relevant validation and a readjusting of the target back to the original antagonist of liberty.

This blatant criticism of the political landscape of Africa is a theme long embraced by Dimitri & The Scarecrow. The first verse assumes a cynical satire where the subject being addressed is held up by fear as opposed to respect. Considering the rhythmic sense of time signature and syncopated rhyme patterns, this verse is a divisive means to separate or ironically segregate generations. The youth are often viewed as more frivolous than sensible and the elders as wise and a sturdy hand to guide the future. So why are they firing bullets at concerned citizens, brutalising them with police violence or blatantly killing them mercilessly?! The second verse then alludes to the elders in fact being leaches with far more insidious agendas but remember, speaking up may just lead to one's demise. The chorus is one which is driven by optimism and the Scarecrow is giving you the news that you lack.

Dimitri & The Scarecrow is musical concept developed by Zimbabwean (Ugandan based) Dimitri D. Kwenda. Conceptually the Scarecrow as a metaphor based on the agrarian system of Zimbabwe as a utility to summarize the people in juxtaposition between governance and survival. Employing poetry, satire and humorist styles, Dimitri addresses a kaleidoscope of matters as an observer, victim, idealist, realist, critic & the privileged. Alternative Hip-Hop is the main genre utilized as the medium of expression for Dimitri & The Scarecrow.
