Nice soundscape. The rain/nature sounds are a good front and center to the background, eerie instrumentation

Watching Dead Empires in Decay’, an album recorded under another of Kirby’s pseudonyms ‘The Stranger’ and released on Modern Love, a label that has been close to Kirby through these last eventful 15 years. It’s a dream album for the label: perhaps the most ambitious of Kirby’s career so far. It’s complex, singular, enigmatic, percussive, dark, and you just can’t work out how it was constructed.

Gone are the sampled 78’s of The Caretaker, but it also doesn't exactly sound electronic - you just can’t quite fathom how any of it was put together: Field Recordings? Found Sounds? Sheets of metal scraped and hammered? Drum machines re-wired? It’s stark and unsettling, haunted, even troubling - but often just beautiful.

Sercient (sandpass remix)

This one is a foot in the puddle of my heavier ambient sound with some clackity beats and waves of fuzz from my guitar, but not so fuzzy the lord can't hear the melodies. There is a sample in there somewhere from some Beach Boys ripoff 60s vocal group and it originally sounded like they were saying "Hurry" which is where the name came from. Under all the layers of guitar and shit you can hardly hear it.

This is probably the poppiest track on the album. It is fairly simple and short. I had a dream where I had lost my bag in some shopping centre that had become a warzone. There were soldiers and rebels shooting each other and conflict everywhere.  I wanted to get out of there but I had lost my bag. I was searching through this big pile of bags to find mine. At the same time some children were searching the same pile of bags for their friend - who they referred to as "The Rain Captain". They were shouting his name in my dream.

The mayor has decided that it's time to hear more from Scarfolk's audio archive.

This post refers to a previous one about the disappearance of primary school music teacher Mrs. Payne whose body was found encased inside an ancient standing stone (go here for more detail)

Forensic examination of the stone revealed that it had originated more than 300 miles away and historians could not ascertain how prehistoric man had transported it to Scarfolk, much less how Mrs Payne had found her way into a 300 million year old rock. The police reported it as a chance accident.

When the stone was broken into chunks and sold as 'Payne's Pain' souvenirs in the Scarfolk gift shop, purchasers began hearing ghostly music in their homes. Additionally, the music was heard at the stone circle where Mrs. Payne's body was found, as well as at the geological site of the stone's origin.

The souvenirs were recalled and buried at the centre of the stone circle in Scarfolk fields, now the only location where the music can still be heard, but only on the anniversary of the death of Payne's husband who found himself unexpectedly dismembered during a pagan ritual competition for the under 10s.

Here in Scarfolk, pagan rituals blend seamlessly with science; hauntology is a compulsory subject at school, and everyone must be in bed by 8pm because they are perpetually running a slight fever. "Visit Scarfolk today. Our number one priority is keeping rabies at bay."
