Dean: "One cold night last winter I lit the fire, poured myself a wee dram and got my guitar out. I decided to play some of my favourite old songs and record them onto my dictaphone just for the hell of it.  On each of the 12 days leading up to Christmas I’m going to post a track from that ‘Firesongs’ session on Soundcloud so you can have a listen. You can hear the fire crackling and the occasional little mistake here and there, but it’s just a little bit of fun.

"So I’m heading back from New Mexico to Nashville with my Buffalo Blood buddies Neilson Hubbard, Joshua Britt, Audrey Rose Spillman and James DeMain following old Route 66. Somewhere just outside of Amarillo, Texas Jim turns to me and says ‘Ali’s dead’. This year alone I’ve heard the words – Bowie’s dead, Prince’s dead, Guy Clarke’s dead and as much as those words saddened and upset me none of them hit me like those words - ‘Ali’s dead’.

I sat there looking out the window into the Texas night as we rolled through the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas and Tennessee thinking about Ali and how much he’d influenced me in my life. He was more than one the greatest boxers that ever lived. He was one of the greatest human beings that ever lived. A true legend. A prophet. A guiding light.

When I got back to my dear friends Will Kimbrough and Jessica Morgan Kimbrough's last night it finally started to sink in. I haven’t watched any TV while I’ve been over here so I haven’t seen any of the media frenzy that has no doubt been going on around the world about Ali’s passing. And to be honest I’m kind of glad. I don’t have to watch the news and hear how all these celebrities feel about the loss of Ali. I can just focus on my own thoughts of the great man and on what he meant to me.

As a young boxer I wanted to be like Ali. I wanted to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. I wanted to do the Ali shuffle and wear shiny white shorts with black stripes. Maybe there’s a part of me that still does. Doesn’t every man ;)

I wasn’t much of a boxer. I probably lost as many fights as I won. On the same day I got presented with the Boxer Of The Year trophy by Leith Victoria I got stopped in the first round. I guess that’s life. But whatever I’ve done so far in my life Ali has always been there casting his huge shadow and inspiring me to keep going, keep dreaming and never give up.

The first thing I did last night after I got in was take my guitar out of it’s case and within seconds I had a wee song coming through to me. I played some chords and wrote down some words and it felt quite good. I cried a little while I sang it and finally, exhausted I went to bed.

When I got up this morning I asked Will if I could play him this wee sketch of the song to see if I had anything. Will listened to it and said ‘why don’t you record it now’. To me it was just a sketch and unfinished, but I thought ‘what the hell, I might as well get it down while I’m in the moment’. We went out into Will’s studio (Kimbrough’s Super Service Studios), he set up a couple of microphones and I recorded this – The Louisville Lip. It’s rough and ready and loose as a goose, so I hope you don’t mind me sharing it with you in this state.

Thanks Ali for all you have given me and inspired me to do in my life. Always The Greatest. Rest In Peace."
