The new album by Alessandro Scala connects itself to the fertile and alluring scene of contemporary Hard-Bop that is constantly proving its quality with solid results, especially in Italy.
This work is a perfect balance of traditional  influences and contemporary inspirations, an intense and fruitful study that leads to a new, rich and articulate way of expression.
Through his original compositions and the intense dialogue with trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso and trombonist Roberto Rossi, Alessandro consciously builds a sparse and sometimes lyrical language, enhanced by the rhythm section provided by Nico Menci, Paolo Ghetti and Stefano Paolini. The result is vivid and bright. Another valuable piece has been added our considerable Jazz history.

Gerardo Frisina has established himself throughout the years as one of the finest interpreters of the Latin-influenced Jazz club sound. Four years after the release of “Join the Dance”, he returns on Schema with a brand new album, “Movement”.

Gerardoʼs contribution to the history of Italian Jazz is remarkable: along with his activity as a producer, his work has been pivotal in uncovering rare Italian and European Jazz for international audiences, thus reviving this rich heritage. The studio is where he feels at home: his recent activity has been considerable, with a multitude of projects and single releases, and finally, a new album. Like a gifted movie director, he conducts with delicacy and mastery a fine ensemble of musicians, bringing into these recordings the outcome of lifelong research into sound. His fifth full-length album summarizes his experiences, his endless listening sessions and experiments with different music cultures.

Here are 12 pieces describing another amazing journey through Gerardoʼs rich and exotic influences: these are the adventures of a European Jazz man immersed in Afro-Cuban inspirations. Gerardoʼs love for Cuban music is well- known. Jazz had been influenced by Cuban music since its early days and Gerardoʼs blend of this tradition has become a trademark. His fans will not be disappointed by “Movement” and the uninitiated will discover the manifold nuances of his sound.

Originally released in 2001 on Schema’s sister label Milano 2000 (Europe) and Chicago cult label Guidance Recordings (U.S.A. and Japan), the album is considered a classic in Trip-Hop history and got international acclaim by taste makers like Thievery Corporation, Zero 7 and Four Tet, which remixed “Così ti Amo”.

Jazz and funk textures, dreamy keyboard melodies, Balearic guitar vibes and sultry female vocals create an engaging montage of sublime Mediterranean flavored Trip-Hop soundscapes.

Imagine DJ Shadow and Ennio Morricone scoring the soundtrack of a Jean Luc Godard film and you’ll get the picture!

Iconic country music legend, Country Hall of Famer and most recently a Kennedy Center Honoree, MERLE HAGGARD, is releasing a new album, Working In Tennessee, on October 4th. This marks his second disc for Vanguard Records and is a collection of self-penned Haggard riches, plus a couple of classics made famous by Johnny Cash, as well as a new version of Merle’s stalwart “Working Man Blues” featuring Willie Nelson and his son Ben Haggard.

You must name the tracks and artists and the first one to get it right will receive a proper bundle of vinyl from Brownswood records and from the basement - some old and new in there....but I don't think you'll get it so I might as well throw in a copy of Donald Byrd's Kofi if I can find my second one!

Jim Murray and me - for a radio programme (once did this on Saturday afternoon Belgian cultural radio in Brussels - The Long March....there was a bar in the studio!....free Belgian beer all afternoon - a first for me).

Jim's playing is outstanding on this - the National is a 30's Style 'O' and his solo is blistering! I always love making the shrill noises and frightening people....one thing that really irritates me about this track is that it was obvious to me that my C harp had a flat note (or two) and this just takes the edge off for me, although the high G harp section is right in tune...sometimes you just have to live with it - that's the blues
