Solid Steel (1st November) Having announced that Four Tet will be joining the line up for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London on 6th Dec, we now hand over the decks to him for a 2 Hour exclusive mix. 
Four Tet's history with the show extends back to his first mix in 2001 and part of the Solid Steel US Tour that year with DJ Food, DK and Bonobo. He was also the first guest at the monthly Solid Steel club night in 2004, with more mixes to follow and his music has been consistently played on the show. 

As with all our 25th Anniversary guests, we asked for something different and here's what he said about his mix;

"This mix is made from unofficial edits and mixes.  I guess these edits were mainly made to be played in clubs and I've always like the tradition of DJs extending and rearranging to make things work in their sets.  Most of the edits here are unreleased because they are just tools for DJs really.  The Black Unity one was done for the Solid Steel US tour that I did in 2001.  Thanks to Daphni, Floating Points and Happa for the edits I got from them."

Violinist, singer, and composer Kishi Bashi is slated to release his new album on May 13, 2014. The album entitled "Lighght" (pronounced "Light") continues and expands the sound of his critically acclaimed debut, "151a" - which earned Kishi Bashi the title of "Best New Artist" by NPR. Since the profoundly successful release of "151a" two years ago, Kishi Bashi has toured relentlessly, captivating audiences across the globe with his loop-based live show, and fostering a groundswell of devotees. 

"151a" was crafted over a four-year period while Kishi Bashi was touring and recording with Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal (where he was a full-time member and co-producer). In late 2012, after the success of "151a", Kishi Bashi decided to focus solely on his own music and began composing the new material which has become "Lighght".

"Lighght" takes its title from the one-word poem by minimalist poet Aram Saroyan. As Kishi Bashi explains, "The poem's blatant assault on literary convention and classical form was attractive to me." It is apparent that such an approach informed the new album, which has both broadened and redefined his classical foundations. "Though I have studied classical composition, I prefer to take an unconventional path when it comes to creating and thinking about music," says Kishi Bashi. 

Though violin remains his primary instrument and songwriting muse, Kishi Bashi has expanded his palette to include more diverse and nuanced instrumentation. Bright and soaring avant-pop songs are prevalent, as are Eastern-tinged arrangements, gentle ballads, Philip Glass inspired improvisations, and more than a few moments that flirt with 70s prog (in the tradition of ELO or Yes). 

If this sounds jarringly kaleidoscopic, that's because it is. But it works. Listen and see.

BONOBO - Stay The Same

This was my final song in Lucerne, Switzerland, at Sudpol. I'd spent five days in Portugal, then flown to the Netherlands. We drove from there down through Germany, ending up in Zurich. We stopped there because my manager's friend, Gregory Alan Isakov, was playing there and we had a day off. We then drove in to Lucerne. It was the first show in a few days and I was really ready to sing.

I noticed that as we were driving through Germany that there were so many castles up on the hills, overlooking the valleys and the rivers. As we continued to drive, I noticed that where there was a tall hill, when there wasn't a castle there was a communication tower. I started thinking about how in the old days we built castles and walls to protect us and keep our enemies away and now we built communication towers to spread messages far and wide. We can't decide what gets passed around.
Several years ago I sang a song called "You Can't Wear But One Pair of Shoes Off In Your Grave," and it is an idea I've sung about since. As I was singing about castles and towers I was reminded of the fact that no matter what we have, how much we accumulate, we can't take it with us to the grave.
About three years ago, I was in Nashville, Tennessee, working on a sculpture commission for the city. While I was there, I met the amazing storyteller Minton Sparks. We had coffee and talked about art and life and decided that we wanted to make some sounds together. She booked studio time the next day. We recorded three songs together. They weren't written down. We just improvised them. One of the songs we did was called, "I've Got A Dime in My Shoe for You." Minton and I have become great friends and have seen each other many times since then. And I think of her often. And I thought about her while singing in Lucerne, and you'll hear me talk about that in the song.
