Amadeus sees it’s catalog graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead.

Title track and aside, “816 To Nunhead,” is tinged with what’s left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It’s a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, “I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever.” 

What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, “78 To Stanley Bay,” a tune built behind the ever looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aesili, ’78 To Stanley Bay’ tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

I decided to put out a bunch of the stuff that has been sitting in the lab. These are all beats I made from somewhere between the late nineties and 2007ish.
Also put some of the unfinished tunes that were recorded here on this. Two tunes with my homegirl Tiombe Lockhart, one tune with the big homie C Rayz Walz, a freestyle iphone recording from PROPS of Renee Neufville over a beat i really like, one with Vinia Mojica that she co produced, which we did in one night as a scratch track for a CMJ showcase we had at PROPS.

Khruangbin are the Texas based three-piece that make psychedelic, acid jazz infused Thai funk music. Oh yes. Comprised of Laura Lee, Mark Speer and Donald Johnson, the trio have supported Bonobo across his USA tour and even had a track included in his Late Night Tales mix last year.LNT's artist label Night Time Stories subsequently signed them up, with single 'A Calf Born In Winter' released 19th May and an album in the works. Providing the soundtrack to your dreams and entering i-D's mid-week wind down session for their first ever mix, these are the psychedelic sounds of Khruangbin. Drift off.

Slumber Session: Khruangbin

It's time for the 96th installment of our Truancy Volume series and we're ecstatic to have secured the services of 22 year old Canadian Rook Milo for the task. A celebrated maestro in the more emotional circles of Soundcloud, Rook first came to our attention when he was earmarked by previous TV-contributor Ryan Hemsworth as one to keep an ear out for in an article for Interview Magazine. It would probably be fair to say that Ryan indirectly puts us on to a whole heap of great underground artists, but this guy in particular struck a chord. Back at the release of "Cobalt Polo", the particular track that was flagged up, young Rook's signature was a dazzling hip hop, placing somewhere between the Glaswegian Lucky Me giants and L.A. Brainfeeder beat gurus. Since then his sound has very much matured. The most notable examples, his remixes of Drake's "The Language" and Travi$ Scott's "Upper Echelon" are more spatially aware, almost desolate with only the occasional underlying supernova. Certainly not of this world.

Toy Tonics records does tracks made for the dancefloor. Newcomers from all around the world. Now Jacky Mingo & Kapote deliver their first ever release.  The kids have latin-american roots, but live in Berlin. They love soul music. They like Moodymann. And french filter house - this certain sex appeal. The first track Caliente is a hymn to Mexico. It was made with a little help from Munk. The backingtrack reminds late 90ies Soul-house artists like Black Science Orchestra or Masters at Work. The other two tracks are funk-driven DJ tools for old school dancefloors. Friends of Max Graef or Todd Terje will love this.

Jacky Mingo & Kapote - Caliente

Arpentant la scène électronique depuis plus de 20 ans, Art of Tones n'est pas un nouveau venu dans le game. Il fait ses armes à partir du milieu des 90's sous le nom de Llorca et se crée une solide réputation dans le milieu. En 1997, il est repéré par Laurent Garnier qui l'intègre à son label de l'époque : F-Communications. Il y signera plusieurs EP et Maxi remarqués, ainsi que l'album « Newcomer » en 2001 qui le propulsera sous les feux de la rampe.
2008 voit débarquer un EP nommé « Insatiable » chez 20/20 Vision. EP qui trustera les charts spécialisés pendant plusieurs semaines, permettant au projet Art of Tones de prendre son envole et prouvant au passage que Ludovic Llorca n'a rien perdu de sa superbe.
Depuis, les EP à succès s’enchaînent que ce soit chez Room With A View, Defected, Lazy Days ou Local Talk pour « The Rainbow Song », le petit dernier sortit le 25 mai. 

Quelques semaines après avoir chroniqué « The Rainbow Song » et à l'occasion de la sortie de sa Mixed By ; Ludovic Llorca a.k.a Art of Tones nous fait l'honneur et le plaisir de répondre à quelques questions. De quoi vous occuper les yeux à lire pendant que vos oreilles profitent de sa Mixed By.
